Tim Weah’s new chapter as Marseille’s club captain began with an opening weekend victory.Weah wore the captain’s armband on Friday in Marseille’s 4-0 Ligue 1 win over Strasbourg, logging 90 minutes in the result. The versatile U.S. Men’s National Team player retained his starting spot as right back in Bruno Genesio’s squad, helping them earn a first three points of the new campaign. Following a goal-less first half, Amine Gouiri opened the scoring for Marseille one minute after halftime before doubling his tally 22 minutes later. Keyliane Abdallah extended the hosts lead before stoppage time ahead of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg iced the final score at 4-0. Weah created one offensive opportunity, won one duel, and made two defensive clearances as Marseille picked up a crucial shutout win to begin competitive play. The 26-year-old was rarely troubled in the match, continuing his consistency at the back end of the pitch. Weah and his Marseille teammates will next travel to Monaco on August 30.
