Viva.com, the first Tech Bank in Europe for businesses, has been awarded by the Treasury of the Republic of Cyprus the contract to provide electronic transaction processing services for the Cypriot state. In doing so, Viva.com will set up an advanced payments infrastructure for the Cypriot state, reinforcing its position as a pan-European critical banking infrastructure that combines scale with local expertise, serving both public institutions and businesses across Europe. The contract covers electronic payments made by citizens and businesses to the Cypriot state, including direct taxes, vehicle license renewals, and social insurance contributions, with total managed payment volume expected to exceed €1,5 billion annually.Under the agreement, Viva.com will provide the Cypriot State with a modern, multi-channel electronic transaction processing infrastructure. The new platform gives citizens more ways to pay, combining card and account-to-account (A2A) payments, while providing the State with a more efficient way to process transactions. Viva.com will act as the backbone processing engine behind Cyprus's Payment Gateway (PGW) via the Gov.cy platform, centralising electronic payments and allowing citizens to settle all their obligations to government departments and services through a single platform.Viva.com will be responsible for the management of all online transactions via its Smart Checkout payment solution, and the procurement, installation and maintenance of all physical card-acceptance (POS) terminals featuring its Tap on Any Device technology, across Cyprus's public services. The award follows Viva.com's selection in July by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union (DG TAXUD) - in partnership with European Dynamics, a leading eGovernment and digital transformation company -, to build and operate the central payment platform behind the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), covering all 27 member states from 2027 - one of the EU’s flagship climate initiatives. Harry Xenophontos, Chief Business Officer, Viva.com, commented:“We're proud to bring our pan-European critical banking infrastructure to support an essential function of Cyprus's public sector. This means a more convenient way for citizens to pay, while reducing the State's cost of electronic transactions. We are fully committed to bringing that same combination of innovation and efficiency to payments, banking and financing in Cyprus and across our footprint of 31 European countries."NoYesPayments24 Aug, 2026
