In 2007, the spiritual successor to Guitar Hero was released. Rock Band brought friends together in basements and living rooms everywhere. But instead of competition, it presented a beautifully collaborative gameplay. With Rock Band, you almost believed that maybe you and your friends could start a band, too. The soundtrack to the first Rock Band set an ambitious stage for the following iterations. Here are four songs that serve as a time capsule of weekends spent jamming for a high score.“Are You Gonna Be My Girl” by Jet“Are You Gonna Be My Girl” was Jet’s debut single from their 2003 album Get Born. Its popularity in the U.S. gave the rock band their first Top 40 hit right off the bat. Of course, it also did well in their native Australia. The song’s jangly, Motown-inspired beat made it perfect for a game built around high-energy rock tracks. Even now, the spritely tambourine and bass leading into the explosive guitar intro is a portal straight to 2007, when playing Rock Band for hours made being in an actual band seem ludicrously attainable.“Dani California” by Red Hot Chili PeppersRed Hot Chili Peppers released “Dani California” on their 2006 album Stadium Arcadium, which would quickly become the band’s first No. 1 album. The single broke the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and won two Grammy Awards in 2007. That year, it was also included as a playable track in Rock Band, and it remains one of the most memorable songs in the game. It’s repetitive without getting boring, with just enough variation to keep it interesting as a video game experience, but not impossible to play. A solid groove and the opportunity to get a little funky can go a long way.“I Think I’m Paranoid” by Garbage“I Think I’m Paranoid” appeared on Garbage’s 1998 album Version 2.0. It became the band’s fourth consecutive Top 10 hit single in the U.K. when it debuted at No. 9 on the Singles chart. In the U.S., it spent 26 weeks on the Billboard Modern Rock chart, first at No. 30, then peaking at No. 6. “I Think I’m Paranoid” became one of the band’s best-known tracks, alongside other hits like “Only Happy When it Rains”. Nine years after its release, the song made it to Rock Band. There, it gives players a memorable and distinctly 90s alt-rock experience“Say It Ain’t So” by WeezerWeezer released “Say It Ain’t So” on their 1995 debut self-titled album. Fans and critics alike have long considered it one of the band’s best songs, despite its average chart achievements. Upon its release as a single, it reached No. 7 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart and No. 37 on the U.K. Singles chart. Still, “Say It Ain’t So” is a beloved track, and it made for a great feature in Rock Band. Like the other memorable tracks in that game, there’s enough variety within this song to keep things interesting, but not overwhelm players.
