Angel Quiroz is back and so is one of the horses that is a central figure in the Fair Hill Five scandal. The Great Amira (Rock Your World) has been entered in Friday's fifth race at Monmouth Park, a six-furlong optional claimer.Her regular rider, Carlos Lugo, has the mount.At the deadline for this story, Monmouth Park General Manager John Heims had not responded to an email from the TDN asking him for a comment on the entry of The Great Amira.It will be her first start since she romped by nine lengths in an Aug. 9 $25,000 maiden claimer at Monmouth at odds of 17-1. The maiden-claiming win was her first start since Feb. 8 and came after three published workouts at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland.The Great Amira debuted Oct. 11 at Gulfstream, finishing last in a $50,000 maiden claimer, losing by 31 1/4 lengths. She returned Feb. 8 and again finished last, this time in a $35,000 maiden claimer. She was defeated by 15 lengths. She did not run again until the Monmouth race.The Great Amira's victory was part of what appears to be one of the biggest betting coups in racing history. On the same day that she won, three other horses that were either trained by Quiroz or had previously been trained by him, scored victories after long layoffs and works at Fair Hill. All four improved considerably off their previous form.Quiroz also won the race that followed The Great Amira's win with Tepeyac (Heart to Heart). The Great Amira paid $37.20 and Tepeyac paid $9.60, but the $1 daily double combining the two paid just $12.80.At Saratoga, eyebrows were raised when two more Fair Hill horses won and seemingly outran their previous form. Classic Rock (Daredevil) won a maiden claimer by 8 3/4 lengths. The next Fair Hill-based winner was M Bs Melanie Cares (Redesdale), who won a maiden claimer by 3 1/2 lengths. Those two ran under the name of trainer Ernesto Ochoa, but Quiroz has said that he was the trainer of both until their owners sold them to Ochoa shortly before the Saratoga races.Quiroz also ran another horse at Saratoga that day and under his name. The mare Scootaloo (Mitole) finished fourth, but may have lost all chance after throwing her head at the start and losing her action.The daily double bet at Monmouth appears to be an outlier as all four of the winners paid close to their morning-line odds. However, according to a published report in the Racing Post, bookmakers in the U.K. suffered losses “in the six figures” on bets placed on the horses linked to Quiroz.HISA is among many organizations that have launched investigations into the alleged betting coup, but a HISA spokesperson confirmed that it has taken no action that would prevent Quiroz from running any of the horses involved in the scandal. The only exception is Threedots Andadash (Mendelssohn), who was entered to run Aug. 10 at Presque Isle Downs. In light of the developments the day before, HISA placed that horse on the vet's list.The Great Amira will be the first of the Fair Hill Five horses to run back since Aug. 9 and the first starter for Quiroz since then. But she may soon be followed in the entries by other horses involved in the scandal. Tepeyac shows a four-furlong work on Aug. 21 at Fair Hill in :50.4.Shortly after the Aug. 9 victories, Quiroz denied any wrongdoing, but he has had little to say since. The TDN has sent him numerous texts and left several voice messages with him, but he has not responded.One question that remains unanswered is where he plans to stable in the near future. His lease at Fair Hill expires Sept. 6, and Fair Hill General Manager Will Phipps has said that “he has been asked to leave.”“Quiroz has been asked to leave and he is agreeable,” Phipps said. “He's working through the logistics and has already started moving horses.
