(PTI Photo)At least 12 school buses stuck on a stretch near Subhash Chowk for more than two hours, forcing parents and children to wade through knee-deep water; traffic jams and waterlogging across key parts of the city and safety hazards due to what residents attributed to loose electric wires on poles and in meters — these were the scenes that Gurgaon witnessed as 75 mm of rain between 8 am and 5 pm halted business as usual.The gridlocks caused by the downpour prompted the district administration to issue a work-from-home advisory for private offices on Tuesday. Schools have been advised to hold online classes.Meetu Gupta, a resident of Uniworld Gardens Society in Sector 47, said she waded through a water-logged area for around 20 minutes to reach Rail Vihar where her daughter, a Class 12 student, was stranded in a school bus for nearly one-and-a-half hours. Her daughter, a student of Heritage Xperiential Learning School in Sector 62, was among a large number of schoolchildren stranded as a dozen school buses were unable to navigate the inundated corridor. The other buses stuck included those of Suncity School; Delhi Public School Sushant Lok; Shikshantar School; and GD Goenka Public School.Gupta stepped out of the society with another parent and brought back eight students with them when they realised that the buses were stuck. “One of the buses had broken down, which is why others were not able to move. Students were stranded without food. My daughter was exhausted and had body pain,” Gupta said, adding, “I and another parent took 7–8 children, who are my daughter’s friends and were willing to come to our society. Many other students were stuck till nearly 6 pm. It was so concerning, given the ongoing Metro construction work. What was sad was there seemed to be no police deployment, despite the Sadar station close by.”Several upscale areas were inundated, including Golf Course Road, Artemis Road, and the internal roads of Sector 52, 45 and 55, the roads around Galleria and Super Mart, apart from the usual hotspot of Sheetla Mata Road.Addressing the waterlogging measures undertaken since the heavy rain on August 6, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram’s Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya pointed to critical infrastructural bottlenecks that continue to hinder runoff disposal.According to Dahiya, a 300-to-400-metre cross-section drain near Medanta is yet to be constructed by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), leaving the stretch vulnerable. “However, given the heavy 75mm rain received in a couple of hours, the water did subside speedily. A place remains a pain point if water doesn’t drain,” he said, pointing to Narsinghpur as being a previous waterlogging hotspot that was clear this time.Story continues below this adDahiya, along with MCG and GMDA officials visited Subhash Chowk at 10 pm, and gave instructions to the officers to work towards solutions for waterlogging in the area.When contacted, GMDA officials said their on-ground teams cleared accumulated water from all main road stretches quickly and undertook drainage inlet cleaning to prevent further water accumulation. “Traffic movement soon returned to normal and commuters moved smoothly,” a GMDA spokesperson claimed.“Prompt action by GMDA field teams cleared waterlogging along Sector 50, near St Xavier’s School, a known hotspot in previous years.
