SDGR: AI Drug Discovery Is Finally Showing Commercial TractionSchrodinger, Inc.BATS:SDGRstouflacrucoSDGR is one of those stocks where the share-price chart looks almost incompatible with the underlying technology story. Schrödinger traded above $110 in 2021. Today it sits around $16, after years of multiple compression, persistent operating losses and investor fatigue around computational drug discovery. But the latest data are getting harder to ignore. Software demand is improving, Schrödinger's AI strategy is becoming commercially tangible, costs are falling — and my scanner has moved into a Quality Starter BUY. Master Buy Scanner V2 — Monthly Score: 2/3 Action: QUALITY STARTER Decision: QUALITY BUY BUY state: QUALITY ACTIVE Entry quality: QUALITY — 65% Setup maturity: QUALITY Position size: STARTER — 25% Top recent: YES WT cross: YES Band 1: ORANGE Combined: GREEN 4/10 Bands sync: NO Cycle: FIRED WT1 / WT2: -35.04 / -49.15 The important distinction here is starter. The bullish WT cross has happened and the cycle has fired, but Band 1 remains orange and the bands are not synchronized. So technically I see this as: early reversal confirmation — not yet a fully mature trend reversal. The software business is stronger than revenue currently suggests Q2 software revenue actually declined 10% to $32.5M. Normally that would be a major warning sign. But Schrödinger is deliberately transitioning customers from traditional licensing toward hosted software, which changes the timing of revenue recognition. A better measure right now is ACV. Q2 ACV reached $29.6M, +27% YoY, while ACV excluding contribution contracts increased 23%. Trailing four-quarter ACV reached $208M. Hosted software already represented 47% of Q2 software revenue, versus a much smaller proportion historically. Management now expects 2026 ACV of $218–228M, representing another 10–15% increase. That tells me the underlying software franchise is performing better than the headline revenue decline implies. Bunsen could be the genuinely interesting AI catalyst Schrödinger isn't simply attaching "AI" to an existing product. Its new product, Bunsen, is an agentic AI co-scientist designed specifically for molecular discovery. Researchers can give it scientific objectives and Bunsen can help design computational strategies, execute molecular simulations and interpret the results. The interesting part is what sits underneath it: Schrödinger's physics-based simulation stack. Rather than asking a generic LLM to guess molecular behavior, Bunsen combines AI orchestration with decades of computational chemistry models. Schrödinger launched early access in July with infrastructure support from NVIDIA and Google Cloud. And only days later, Bristol Myers Squibb agreed to deploy Bunsen across its research organization, including collaboration on new functionality. That is the type of validation I want to see. Not AI demos. Actual pharmaceutical customers expanding usage. The drug-discovery model is also producing real-world validation Schrödinger has always had an unusual model. It sells software, but also uses that same technology to discover drugs internally and through partnerships. Q2 drug-discovery revenue rose to $23M from $13.9M, helped by a $10M milestone connected with Ajax Therapeutics. And Ajax itself is important. Eli Lilly agreed to acquire Ajax for up to $2.3B, giving Schrödinger another example of a molecule discovered using its computational platform ultimately attracting significant pharmaceutical value. That follows previous Schrödinger-linked successes including Morphic and Nimbus. This doesn't guarantee that Schrödinger's own pipeline will succeed. But it provides evidence that the platform can produce economically valuable molecules. The balance sheet gives them time This matters because SDGR is still not sustainably profitable. Q2 reported net income of $6M, versus a $43M loss last year — but investors shouldn't mistake this for operational profitability. Schrödinger still recorded an operating loss of roughly $41.5M. The positive net result came largely from a $45.9M gain on equity investments, primarily associated with Lilly's Ajax acquisition. So the turnaround isn't complete. But Schrödinger finished Q2 with approximately: $419M in cash, restricted cash and marketable securities. Operating expenses also declined 6% YoY to $74M, and management expects 2026 operating expenses to finish below 2025 levels. That significantly reduces near-term financing risk. The scanner also identifies the main weakness: valuation/profitability This isn't traditional deep value. My scanner shows: Business quality: GREEN — 2/3 but: Return on capital: -21.09% — RED and valuation is: RED — 1/4 with: Cash yield: -9.16% Cash-flow price: 73.89 — RED Profit/share: -0.74 — RED That makes sense. You're not buying SDGR because current earnings make it cheap. You're buying it because the market could eventually place much more value on: software growth + AI adoption + drug-discovery economics + operating leverage. That's a much more speculative thesis. Why I'm interested now There are several things happening simultaneously: ACV +27% Bunsen launched BMS already deploying it Drug discovery revenue accelerating Operating expenses declining $419M liquidity Monthly WT bullish cross Cycle FIRED Recovery CONFIRMED Meanwhile the stock remains approximately 85% below its 2021 peak. That's the asymmetry that interests me. But the scanner correctly stops short of a full position because: Band 1 is still ORANGE and Bands Sync = NO. My classification: SPECULATIVE QUALITY STARTER SDGR is not a conventional value stock and it's certainly not a low-risk investment. The company still burns money operationally, pharmaceutical discovery remains inherently uncertain and its current valuation isn't supported by conventional earnings metrics. But the underlying story is improving. For the first time in a while, I can see a plausible combination of commercial AI adoption, accelerating recurring software demand, reduced spending and external validation of the drug-discovery platform. And now the technical structure is beginning to turn as well. Current verdict: QUALITY STARTER — 25%. I wouldn't treat this as a confirmed long-term bottom yet. But around these levels, I think SDGR has become considerably more interesting than the chart alone would suggest. What would you do? A) Start small around current levels B) Wait for Band 1 to turn green C) Wait for full band synchronization Master Buy Scanner V2 Not financial advice.
