Iran says they Barron Trump in its crosshairs. Over the weekend, an ominous video was broadcast on Iran’s state-controlled IRIB Channel 3 outlining how they have breached Barron’s personal and digital security and offering a $10 million bounty. Donald Trump’s youngest son maintains a low profile as he attends New York University, generally only appearing in public at Trump family events and major ceremonies like his father’s inauguration. But, like all children of presidents, he has Secret Service protection. Now a video, reportedly linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, claims that they’ve been able to track Barron’s movements both online and offline, saying that although he leads a “reclusive” life, he’s active on Discord, Xbox, and plays EA Sports FC 6 (the series formerly known as FIFA). Is this a credible threat? The video goes on to identify supposed figures they believe can get into Barron’s “backyard”, including one woman they say managed to meet with him privately before passing information back to them. As for how they learned these details, they boast that it was “no difficult task”, and conclude “millions of FIFA players against Trump are waiting to receive a ten million-dollar prize from us”. Obviously the precise details of Barron’s security and how he spends his time online aren’t public knowledge, so there’s no way to verify the information. However, this does tally with previous reports that Barron’s phone usage is closely monitored and restricted. Incidentally, Barron himself was at the center of a campaign to send him to serve in the ongoing Middle East conflict. Additionally, this isn’t the first Iran-linked video claiming they’re targeting members of the Trump family. In late July, a similar video was released titled “Where to Kill Melania”, and showing what they said were her New York routines and shopping habits. It goes without saying that the US president is an assassination target, but there is a long history of threats against their family members. For example, in 2009 35-year-old Kristy Lee Roshia threatened Michelle and Sasha Obama, and in 2016, a South Korean man identified only as “Lee” made rape threats against Sasha Obama. That said, there are no other examples other than this of a state threatening a president’s child so directly. For the world’s sake, we should all hope Iran is bluffing.
