Toronto moviegoers who were hoping to see “Tony” at Imagine Cinemas in the downtown core will need to buy tickets from another theatre after the film was abruptly pulled from its Carlton location this week.In a statement to CityNews, the theatre said the “disappointing” decision was due to circumstances outside of their control.“Unfortunately, the cinema industry is still plagued with anti-competitive practices that prevent independent cinemas from showing movies in some locations when dominant cinemas want ‘clearance’ in a geographic area,” a spokesperson said. “This one was very disappointing for us as Tony is just the type of movie that patrons of The Carlton are hungry for and support in droves,” they added.Officials say the film was pulled after it was booked and tickets were already sold.“Tony” tells the story of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain’s early career in a Provincetown kitchen and how it shaped the rest of his life. It is the latest film from Canadian director Matt Johnson whose 2025 film “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie” won the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.“Tony” has scored solid reviews from critics and a score of 94 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.Imagine Cinemas is advising the public to reach out to the film’s production company and its director to “help demonstrate the demand for films like this at independent cinemas.”They’re also encouraging guests to file a complaint with the Competition Bureau of Canada about “unfair business practices being used in theatrical distribution in Canada.”“We truly appreciate your support of Imagine Cinemas Carlton and your continued support of independent cinema in Toronto,” it added. “We’ll continue doing everything we can to bring unique, exciting and in-demand films to our screens.”A24 did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
