Wrexham target Pavel Sulc would immediately become the best player in the Championship if he joins.That’s the verdict of European football expert Andy Brassell amid links to the 25-year-old Lyon forward.Sulc joined Lyon from Viktoria Plzen in 2025GettyCzech Republic international Sulc scored 14 goals in all competitions for the Ligue 1 club last season.Wrexham are reportedly plotting a club-record bid for the 2025 Czech player of the year.They have already broken that this summer, signing goalkeeper Anthony Patterson from Sunderland for £8m.This could soon be dwarfed by any transfer for Sulc as the Red Dragons look for more firepower to send them into the Premier League.Speaking to talkSPORT.com, Brassell said: “Lyon paid €7.5m and he has just been a massive, massive hit. When you look at the sort of players who traditionally thrive in France, he probably shouldn’t have been one.“He’s a forward player, traditionally a second striker. He was sold as an attacking midfielder, but he played as a second striker or false nine. He’s done it so well, considering he’s built like a sparrow. “He’s had a lot of attention from defenders, but he’s smart enough to avoid it.“He makes great runs. He’s technically very adept and considering that he’s not the biggest guy, it’s actually quite difficult to shove off the ball. “I think you’d look at someone of that height and build and you’d think, he’s not going to do it in the Championship.“But I think he would. I really think he would. In terms of technical quality, he would be, if not the best player in the division, pretty close because he was one of the better players in Ligue 1 last season. Secondly, the way he clicked with Endrick was notable. “Technically, they’re on a level where they can just understand each other. They played really well for a bit until Sulc got injured in the back half of last season.“That hung over the end of his season and the World Cup and his preseason. Even though he’s had his moments in all of those. “Bear in mind, without Sulc, they wouldn’t have got to the World Cup because he is a technically very gifted player in a quite average Czech team, if we’re talking about the standards of their best teams. They’ve had some unreal players down the years.”Why do Lyon need to sell?Lyon were initially demoted to Ligue 2 in 2025 over their mounting financial problems, but this was later overturned.The main issue was a debt of €541 million owed by the club and a massively inflated wage bill without much cash flow.Sulc featured for the Czech Republic at the 2026 World CupGettyJohn Textor, Lyon’s owner via his holding company the Eagle Football Group and the club’s president, was forced to step down from the board and his role of president by his associates. Michele Kang, a shareholder in Eagle Football Group and successful businesswoman, is now in charge. “It’s funny because when Lyon bought him, it was a bit of a surprise,” Brassell added.“It was really an expression of where they are in terms of the transfer market, that they don’t have much money post-Textor. They are not going fishing in the major leagues. “They don’t sign players for over €10 million these days. Even if they do, they have to sell to balance the books.“Sulc is a player who, when he came in, everyone was a little bit perplexed because he’s from Czech football. It felt like a bit of a leap. “Traditionally, really good Czech players tend to go to the bottom half of the Bundesliga. It was an expression of where Lyon were in terms of their financial means.”Lyon in the Champions LeagueDespite those well publicised financial interests, Lyon qualified for the Champions League.They play their second play-off leg against Fenerbahce, for a place in the group stage, on Wednesday.Despite this, the club will likely need to make more sales before the transfer window closes.Wrexham have drawn their opening two Championship gamesGettyBrassell continued: “It was reported about a week ago that even if they do qualify for the Champions League in the playoff against Fenerbahce this week, they’ll have to sell one. “It’s probably down to Sulc or Malek Fofana. Either of whom they could turn a very nice profit on from what they originally paid. “Fofana has made it clear that he wants to stay if they make the Champions League.“Fofana is a very, very high-level player, but last season was completely ruined by injury. He’s had a few little problems, a few big problems actually, trying to come back from that as well and it forced him to miss the World Cup in the summer.“Lyon’s plan was for him to have a good World Cup and then to sell him after. That obviously didn’t work out because of the injury.“I think he understands go out there, really get my value up by doing good stuff in the Champions League. “The clubs that have been interested in Fofana before – we’re talking about Chelsea. We’re talking about Bayern, the sort of clubs who would be in for him.“If he shows he can reach that level again, they’ll be back for him in summer 2027 after he’s done a good job for Lyon this season.“From Lyon’s perspective, it would probably be a little bit preferable to sell Sulc as well because Fofana is more difficult to replace. “If Wrexham offer the sort of money that Lyon are looking for for Pavel Sulc, that would be an enormous statement of intent.”
