“No matter where you turn, and how much you try to ignore them, all roads lead to Keith.”That was the message delivered to jurors by Yorgen Fenech’s lawyer Charles Mercieca as the defence continued making its case in the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder trial.Mercieca told the jury that Fenech had offered to take the witness stand to “explain the truth”, despite having no legal obligation to testify.According to the defence lawyer, Fenech never authorised anyone to carry out Caruana Galizia’s murder and answered all the questions put to him.“He never gave the go-ahead to anyone to carry out this murder,” Mercieca told jurors.But a significant part of the defence’s argument instead focused on former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri and his interactions with former police inspector David Gatt.Mercieca questioned why Schembri and Gatt had met the day after Santa Marija and why Gatt had apparently felt the need to demonstrate that he was not recording their conversation.The lawyer suggested to jurors that the conversation could potentially have concerned Caruana Galizia’s murder.Mercieca also criticised the way Schembri described an incident involving Gatt being naked in his office, arguing that Schembri had “ridiculed” the proceedings through his choice of words.“He didn’t have to word it the way he did. He could have just described him as ‘indecent’,” Mercieca said.The defence ultimately sought to shift jurors’ attention towards Schembri, culminating in Mercieca’s assertion that regardless of which direction the evidence is approached from, “all roads lead to Keith.”Fenech is on trial accused of complicity in the 2017 assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. He denies the charge.•
