Two travellers have taken a trip down memory lane in Malta, recreating photographs snapped by their grandparents during a visit to the islands almost half a century ago.Armed with photos dating back to 1979, the pair returned to the same spots in this year to see just how much, or how little, Malta had changed over the past 47 years.Their journey took them through some of Valletta’s most recognisable locations, carefully recreating the perspectives captured by their grandparents all those decades ago.And while they expected the historic capital to have largely resisted the passage of time, some differences immediately stood out.“I hadn’t expected to find many changes in a city that has done everything possible to withstand the wear and tear of passing years,” they said.“But in Castille Square, we were struck by the contrast.”The comparison between 1979 and 2026 revealed a Valletta that is simultaneously very different and instantly recognisable.Just metres away from some of the more noticeable changes, the travellers found views that could almost have been lifted directly from their grandparents’ photographs.“A few metres away, we looked out, just as my grandparents had, over a history of wars and cannons.”Among the locations revisited were Castille Square, Republic Square and St John’s Co-Cathedral, with each recreated photograph offering its own little window into how the capital has evolved.Beyond documenting Malta’s transformation, however, the project also allowed the pair to retrace their grandparents’ footsteps and experience some of the same sights they had encountered back in 1979.Nearly five decades, two generations and plenty of changes later, the photographs show that while Malta might keep evolving, some views remain remarkably timeless.Would you ever want to recreate your grandparents photos?Photo credits to @losviajesdetoni and @candelajesteban•
