Equality Minister Rosianne Cutajar asked Yorgen Fenech to “find out” details about a Cabinet reshuffle under former prime minister Joseph Muscat when she was Parliamentary Secretary, a court heard.On day 47 of the trial over Fenech’s alleged involvement in the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the prosecution continued its cross-examination of the accused.Prosecutor Godwin Cini resumed his cross-examination by turning to chats exchanged between Fenech and Cutajar. He began by asking whether Fenech had bought her gifts while she was an MP.“It could be that I bought her gifts,” Fenech replied, saying he got to know Cutajar because she was the mayor of Qormi and his father’s side of the family is from the locality.Cini then referred to a message Cutajar sent Fenech saying, “tkixxifli naqra” [find out for me].“Am I correct in saying that Cutajar was asking you to help her with the Cabinet reshuffle?” Cini asked.Fenech said it was possible she had asked him because he “knew some things”.“Did she ask you because of your influence and your political network?” Cini pressed.Fenech denied that this was the reason, saying Cutajar had approached him because she felt comfortable speaking to him, “not for any other reason”.Cini then asked whether Cutajar wanted him to find out from “ix-xiħ” — a reference to former prime minister Joseph Muscat.“It could be, but I did not go and ask Dr Joseph Muscat,” Fenech replied.“Or perhaps from other people involved in politics?” Cini asked.“It could be,” Fenech said.Cutajar was an MP when these messages were exchanged with Yorgen Fenech. Eventually, these were leaked and Cutajar resigned as parliamentary secretary in 2021 while facing an ethics investigation over her involvement in a €3.1 million Mdina property deal linked to Fenech. The Standards Commissioner later concluded that she had breached parliamentary ethics over the deal.
