(Express Photo:The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has constituted a five-member External Inquiry Committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of MSc Physics student Rishikesh Kumar, two days after nearly 300 students protested on campus demanding an independent inquiry into his death.The committee includes former Uttarakhand DGP and IIT Delhi alumnus Ashok Kumar, AIIMS New Delhi psychiatry department head Prof Pratap Sharma, two student representatives and the institute’s Registrar, who will serve as secretary and convenor. The committee has been asked to submit its report within two weeks, The Indian Express has learnt.According to an email sent to students by IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee this morning, the committee will investigate the circumstances leading to Kumar’s death and review relevant records relating to students, faculty and the administration, as well as protocols and processes, before making recommendations.The constitution of the committee comes a day after students gathered at the institute demanding accountability from the administration following the death of 31-year-old Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the sixth floor of a building on campus on Saturday.Sophiya Mathew is a Correspondent at The Indian Express, based in New Delhi.
