A backpack of food per week is for that child not for the family. As a childless youth you might grab some of it for yourself but a parent who loves that kid will not. I have no count of how many times I gave my food to my kids or fed the family and went to bed hungry when we were short or I simply hadn’t gone shopping or a surprise guest showed up. Every mom has done it. And US programs are generally not about sorting hunger but about limiting help - good optics of a backpack if food but how much of that is cereal but not milk, Mac and cheese but no butter or milk? So it still needs topped up and with the more expensive parts and that comes out of a meagre budget leaving adults less to stretch for themselves. This page sometimes loses sight, when scammy assholes are thin on the ground it decides to just smack around some poors. But in this economy with this leadership, 90% of the country is closer to begging and starving than is comfortable, it’s a good idea to look at a kids backpack and imagine that’s all you get to eat at home for a week and compare that to current diet. Unless your diet is 14 ramens and tap water, it’s likely to be a sobering thought AND explain why one bag doesnt stretch to 3 people.
