In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar. If her runner-up finish on Pacific Classic Day at Del Mar was any indication, you're gonna be reading more in the future about Dear Diary (f, 2, Into Mischief–Bound, by Jump Start). The Spendthrift Farm homebred was off to a slow start in her 5 1/2-furlong unveiling for Richard Mandella and was outfooted in eighth as third-time starter Girls Wear Pearls (Hard Spun) dueled through a sharp opening quarter in :21.59.Dear Diary began to catch the eye on the far turn, but was forced to steady in some traffic beneath Mike Smith approaching the quarter pole. The 10-1 chance was steered into the clear with 7 1/2 lengths to make up at the stretch call and came rocketing home to finish within a length of the aforementioned Jena Antonucci-trained Saratoga invader.Dear Diary earned a 55 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.A big day for @DarleyAmerica Hard Spun as 12-1 #5 GIRLS WEAR PEARLS scored in Race 6 at @delmarracing. Watching, I just thought it was a typical first start and she was a little slow getting away. But that gives her that much more of an excuse.”Toffey continued, “Over the winter down at King's Equine in Ocala, the main thing that we saw was that she was a pretty mover and seemed to do things well. We thought fairly highly of her, but it's just always hard to know very much until you put them in the starting gate and let them run. For me, I think in a first start if nothing else, I just want to see them finish up well and she certainly did that. Whatever she was, 10-1 or 11-1, I don't think she'll be that next time out.”Dear Diary, a daughter of Spendthrift Farm's seven-time reigning champion general sire Into Mischief, RNA'd for $475,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. Her multiple stakes-winning dam Bound, also responsible for stakes winner and 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Almostgone Rocket (Into Mischief), brought $75,000 from SF Bloodstock at the 2024 Keeneland November sale.“We did offer her (Dear Diary), but our feeling was that we were gonna make sure that we got fair market value,” Toffey said.“We had always liked her pretty well. We had sold the mare and we bred Almostgone Rocket, so we were gonna have to get paid to let her sell. We were happy to keep her.”As for what's next for Dear Diary, Toffey said, “If the timing is right on a stakes race, I don't think we'd be afraid to make that jump at this stage in the year. We'll keep those options open. We're in good hands with Richard and we'll go from there.” Since launching 'Second Chances' in 2017, 78 maidens have been featured in these pages (through 2025), producing 26% graded stakes winners, 36% stakes winners and 49% stakes horses. The series has introduced 10 future winners at the top level, led by 2025 Horse of the Year and dual Classic winner Sovereignty (Into Mischief), 2023 Horse of the Year Cody's Wish (Curlin) and fellow two-time Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal (Uncle Mo).The post Second Chances: A Runner-Up Debut Worth Writing About for Dear Diary appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
