Faith and festivity mark Milad celebrations across Hyderabad - The HinduPublished - August 26, 2026 09:28 pm IST - HYDERABADMuslims participate in Milad-un-Nabi celebrations at Charminar in Hyderabad on Wednesday. | Photo Credit: RAMAKRISHNA G.Hyderabad came alive on Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammed, on Wednesday, with sermons and supplications, chants and cheering, solemnity and rejoicing, pomp and processions.The All India Majlis-e-Tameer-e-Millat (AIMTM), which organises one of the city’s oldest public meetings to mark the occasion, held its annual event at the Exhibition Grounds this year. Under the leadership of AIMTM president Syed Ayub Hussaini, the jalsa featured a galaxy of speakers, including Islamic scholars who spoke about the seerat (life) of Prophet Muhammed, drawing attention to the lessons it holds and underscoring the importance of following him as the principal role model.The Markazi Milad Juloos Committee, comprising Muslim faith leaders from across the city, joined hands for the annual Markazi Juloos (central procession), which began at the historic Mecca Masjid. Hundreds of young men, travelling on foot and on two-wheelers, as well as a couple of camels, were part of the procession, which steadily swelled as it made its way through the city.The committee stage saw legislators, such as Mir Zulfeqar, and panel members such as Kamil Pasha Shuttari. There was the loud beating of drums near the stage.The procession began a little after the Zohar (afternoon) prayers at the Mecca Masjid and moved through Charminar, Gulzar Houz, Madina Building, Salar Jung Museum, Darul Shifa, Purani Haveli, Kotla Alijah and Bibi Bazaar before culminating near Volta Hotel.Young boys taking part in Milad celebrations at Charminar in Hyderabad on Wednesday. | Photo Credit: RAMAKRISHNA G.Young men, full of energy and enthusiasm, waved Islamic flags as they made their way towards the point of culmination. Smaller groups, at times boisterous, joined the main procession along the route, adding to the crowds and the festive atmosphere.Similar revelry, though much smaller in scale, was witnessed in other parts of the city, including parts of Secunderabad, Banjara Hills, Golconda and Borabanda.There were much quieter scenes of celebrations at homes. Inmates recited the Quran, narrated the hadith (tradition of Prophet Muhammad), and read naats in penned in his honourMeanwhile, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar on Wednesday wished people on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi. Describing Prophet Mohammad as “messenger of peace”, Mr. Sajanar said that the proceedings of the annual central milad procession have thus far been peaceful.Touching upon the security arrangements, the Police Commissioner said that around 2,000 personnel, including rapid action force, law and order police, traffic police, Task force and SHE Teams were stationed across the city to keep watch on the procession.He said instances of rash riding and stunts on two- and three-wheelers had been reported in previous years, and police personnel were keeping a close watch on such violations.
