Wyndham Clark knows he’s in the race to win Player of the Year – but he’ll be more than content with his season regardless of who gets the top personal prize.Clark endured a tough run last year, failing to claim a victory and struggling in the majors.Clark could claim the Player of the Year awardGettyHe started 2026 sluggishly too but has turned his fortunes right around in recent months.Following a disappointing missed cut at the PGA Championship in May, he then produced a stunning display the very next week to win the Byron Nelson with a score of 30-under-par.That set Clark up to excel at the next major and the American dealt superbly well with a hostile crowd at Shinnecock Hills to win his second US Open title. The 32-year-old then made it a hat-trick of wins in 2026 at the BMW Championship last weekend to propel himself right into Player of the Year contention.Scottie Scheffler is the favourite for that gong yet again but Matt Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young, Chris Gotterup and Rory McIlroy are all in the mix in one of the most competitive races for the prize in years.Ahead of this week’s season-ending TOUR Championship, Clark was asked about his chances of claiming it.He said: “It’s not up to me.“Scottie’s the best player in the world right now.“I honestly didn’t even think about Player of the Year coming off such a terrible year [in 2025].“I was more just wanting to get back into contention, wanting to make it to East Lake.Player of the Year contendersScottie Scheffler19 starts, 2 wins, 12 top tensWyndham Clark22 starts, 3 wins, 6 top tens (US Open Champion)Matt Fitzpatrick20 starts, 3 wins, 8 top tensCameron Young19 starts, 2 wins, 8 top tensChris Gotterup22 starts, 3 wins, 6 top tensRory McIlroy13 starts, 1 win, 5 top tens (Masters Champion)Scheffler has won twice this yearGetty“Then I win and then I win a major and [then] I just wanted to make the President Cup team so honestly this has all come pretty quick.“I hadn’t really thought about it so hopefully it’s maybe on the cards but if not, I’m just really pleased with how the year’s gone.”Following his BMW win, Clark said: “I know everyone maybe gives me a hard time and roots for other people.“But I feel like I’ve kind of come into my own. “Three wins in one season is my best year yet – coming off my worst year ever. I’m just really pleased where I’m at right now.”Two-time major winner Clark has had six top tens this year as well as his three victories.Scheffler has won twice but has double the amount of top ten finishes while failing to claim one of the four majors titles this summer.Clark beat McIlroy at the BMW ChampionshipGettyScheffler has won the Player of the Year award for the last three years but his uncharacteristic struggles at getting over the line this season has opened the door to his rivals.Fellow American Gotterup and England’s Fitzpatrick both have a trio of victories on the year while Young won a Signature Event at the Cadillac plus the prestigious Players title. The Jack Nicklaus Trophy for the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year will not be confirmed until December meaning this week’s TOUR Championship could sway the decision.Should one of the six main names in contention win at East Lake, that man will surely become the frontrunner.
