Labour MEP Thomas Bajada has launched a new initiative giving the public access to free drinking water in Żurrieq.The initiative is open to everyone, from passers-by and families to elderly residents, and aims to turn the principle of access to water into something people can benefit from in their everyday lives.Bajada said the project follows his work on the Water Resilience Strategy in the European Parliament, where he pushed the principle that access to water should be considered a right rather than a privilege.He said that principle should not simply remain written in European strategies and documents but should be felt directly within communities.The Żurrieq initiative is being funded by the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, while the Water Services Corporation’s investment in safe potable water has also helped make it possible.Bajada said the project could have an environmental benefit too, encouraging people to refill reusable bottles rather than relying on single-use plastic.He thanked Żurrieq Mayor Rita Grima and the Żurrieq Local Council for taking part and is now inviting other councils across Malta and Gozo to get in touch to introduce similar free drinking water points in their localities.The initiative forms part of the wider Kull Qatra Tgħodd campaign, centred around the message that access to water should be available to everyone.Would you like to see free drinking water points introduced in your locality?•
