Agreeing to differ is good. But how much better to discover that you differ only to agree.The other day I enjoyed a cheerful argument with a stud manager over what I considered his credulity regarding nicks. How could he encourage all these Wall Street types, accustomed to predicting other complex environments with software, who reduce the myriad flesh-and-blood variables of the Thoroughbred to a formula? Shouldn't we stick to the old lore, starting with the mare as a physical specimen and finding the stallion best adapted to her strengths/weaknesses?But then another friend present remarked that we were really proposing the exact same thing. If sire and damsire consistently work together, that's probably because each stamps his stock in such a way that he complements the other. After all, somebody will generally have relied on old-fashioned matchmaking for any coherent nick to evolve in the first place.The continued flowering of GI Pacific Classic winner Knightsbridge (Nyquist) will presumably be nailing down the Nyquist-Bernardini cross that also brands Nysos and Immersive. Unquestionably, three of the very best performers by Nyquist, and each out of a Bernardini mare. Moreover, the dams of Knightsbridge and Immersive are both out of daughters of Awesome Again. And while the granddam of Nysos breaks that pattern, being by Rahy, the “system” is only mildly kinked: Rahy's sire Blushing Groom (Fr) is also damsire of Awesome Again. Simple!Well, however much genetic material these horses happen to share, we can't even guarantee that even two full siblings will have the same coat color, never mind the same ability. Surely it remains wise to apply time-honored precepts of stockmanship, then, until outcomes become consistent enough for those basing their decisions on data.These things are often as much about opportunity as anything. Bernardini's emergence as a broodmare sire has been similarly served, for instance, by another neighbor, Street Sense, who gave two of his daughters Maxfield and Speaker's Corner. (The latter, indeed, out of the same mare as Knightsbridge himself). Presumably the experts at Darley, knowing the models in front of them, were literally “sizing” up matings when pairing Nyquist with Bernardini mares in 2020 and 2021, to come up with Knightsbridge and Immersive, respectively. (Nyquist's first crop only reached the gate in 2020).Opportunity arising from proximity can be compounded by something even simpler: class. People in Europe whisper of Galileo (Ire)-plus-Danehill as some occult formula. But you would like to think that one champion stallion might do pretty well with mares by another, whose top-class daughters happen to be strewn across his home paddocks.Bernardini has proved too potent a broodmare sire to fuss over his daughters' suitors. Of their current parade, Sovereignty is by Into Mischief; Golden Tempo, by Curlin; Magnitude, by Not This Time. And, as noted, the same mare has now come up with exceptional talents by different stallions in the same shed.So it's only fair to credit the unraced Tyburn Brook for much of the quality in Knightsbridge and Speaker's Corner. And that's easily done, given her family tree.For it certainly doesn't suffice to reduce her own dam, as we did above, to “an Awesome Again mare.” Tyburn Brook is out of GI Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Round Pond, who was purchased on retirement in 2007 by Sheikh Mohammed for $5.75 million–partly, no doubt, because she was out of a half-sister to Pennekamp (Bering {GB}), one of the most flamboyant talents to have carried his old maroon-and-white colors. A brilliant juvenile in 1994, Pennekamp then won the G1 2,000 Guineas and duly started favorite for the G1 Derby. Unfortunately, he flopped at Epsom and was not seen again, before proving an equal anti-climax at stud.In fact, he ended up covering jumping mares at €3,000. At that stage, this family looked in danger of petering out. Pennekamp was one of three elite scorers out of Group 1-placed Coral Dance (Fr) (Green Dancer), but the others made no greater impression at stud. Four-time Grade I winner Nasr El Arab (Al Nasr {Fr}) proved anonymous in Japan; while Black Minnaloushe (Storm Cat), a Classic miler for Ballydoyle, was quickly discarded to South Africa.You would never have identified Round Pond's dam Gift of Dance (Trempolino) as the one to keep the dynasty alive, after she failed to break her maiden in 10 attempts. She was sold for $20,000 at the 2004 Keeneland November Sale, carrying her last foal, just weeks before Round Pond began a track career that would transform her from $105,000 yearling to Sheikh Mohammed's top target.Round Pond's seven foals eventually repaid that investment, albeit patience was required. Long River (A.P. Indy) won a Group 1 in the Sheikh's homeland, aged seven; Lake Lucerne (Dubawi {Ire}) rounded off her career with a first stakes success at six; while Highland Falls (Curlin) won the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup at four and has meanwhile joined his half-sister's son at Jonabell.Speaker's Corner, himself winner of the GI Carter Handicap at four, has hitherto mustered just three winners from his first crop, but they do include Schuylerville Stakes winner Harper's Corner. That's auspicious, in a family that has tended to thrive with maturity–a trait underlined by Knightsbridge's full bloom in his fourth season.Not sure that anyone would have predicted that, off the nick that made Immersive a champion juvenile! But that's why dredging the bottom line of a pedigree will always tell you more than any superficial patterns on top.A Reward for StrivingI'll certainly always have time, however, for a broodmare sire on his own account–regardless of any alleged synergy with a particular sire or, even more vaguely, sire-line.Not that anyone has ever really explained the phenomenon, for all that I'm always asking people far better qualified to speculate. How was it, for instance, that Quiet American's debut crop of 32 should include, not just the dam of Bernardini, but also Quiet Dance, dam of Saint Liam and granddam of Gun Runner?That gives Quiet American a tenuous presence behind another of the weekend's big winners, Gun Runner having notched his third elite score of 2026 through My Gun's Loaded in the GI Alabama Stakes.My Gun's Loaded | Sarah AndrewSpeaking of broodmare sires, this filly's dam Strive shares a sire–Congrats–with those of Japanese stars Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) and Danon Decile (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}). Strive herself was runner-up in a minor stakes and her Speightstown half-sister went one better, both on turf. There's solid stuff behind, too. The next two dams, winners at graded and stakes level, respectively, were coincidentally both half-sisters to a winner of the Ladies' Handicap in its better days: already down to Grade II status when Transient Trend (Time for a Change) broke the track record, but Nastique (Naskra) numbered it among her four Grade Is. Her own dam had an illustrious half-sister, too, in champion sprinter Chou Croute (Lt. Stevens).Having mildly stoked those embers, Strive was purchased by Corser Thoroughbreds for $220,000 at KeeNov 2019, carrying a first foal by City of Light, and has since been given every opportunity to kick-start her second career, sent to Curlin between two visits to Gun Runner.The latter assignations certainly paid off at ringside, a weanling colt (unraced) making $380,000 and the filly we now know as My Gun's Loaded fully vindicating Douglas Scharbauer's $650,000 investment as a Keeneland September yearling.Her blossoming duly rewards purposeful work by purchaser and breeder alike. And it's nice, incidentally, to see a second dam reviving the name of D'Accord, Fanfreluche's son by that notable broodmare sire…Secretariat!Versatility Cuts Both WaysYou surely didn't expect me to neglect a footnote about Europe's fastest sprinter? By Maclean's Music, out of a Kantharos mare; next two dams by Boston Harbor and Saratoga Six.The way you turn a “dirt-bred” horse into a turf horse is… to run him on turf. Sadly, the lesson of Bacio's G1 Nunthorpe Stakes will be lost on the locals. Having seen him burn them off over five, they will persist in their cherished misapprehensions about one-dimensional dirt speed. Well, yes, they're fast. But they keep going.It's a two-way street, mind, as Medaglia d'Oro has shown, making a great career through the versatility latent in his physical beauty. It was on turf that the pensioned Darley stallion reached a landmark through Tam Tam, apparently his 100th graded stakes winner, in the GI Del Mar Oaks. Medaglia d'Oro's own dirt prowess was a famous aberration for a son of El Prado (Ire), but his flexibility made him a priceless crossover influence during a culpably insular era. (Nitrogen herself, remember, has been straddling surfaces).Tam Tam | BenoitMedaglia d'Oro conjured his latest grass star from the Basie/Stolen Base branch of the Striking (War Admiral) dynasty, much in vogue since a half-sister to Tam Tam's champion granddam Folklore (Tiznow) produced Essential Quality.Tam Tam is out of Folklore's daughter by Distorted Humor, Princess Julia, who showed good ability in a light career for Stonestreet. Her daughter proved such a princess herself that she cost Rigney Racing $975,000 as a Saratoga yearling. That's plainly now money well spent.
