The decision to back the Goffs Premier Yearling Sale for the first time couldn't have worked out much better for Chasemore Farm after a Blue Point filly that was bred by Oliver McMurray led the way on Tuesday at £250,000 to Rabbah Bloodstock. That sale represented a full circle moment for her breeder who, at this sale in 2019, sourced the dam, Happy Romance (Dandy Man), for just £25,000 through Peter and Ross Doyle. What Happy Romance has done for the full-time builder in the intervening period is nothing short of awe-inspiring and the dream continued with the first foal out of the Al Quoz Sprint runner-up making such a pretty penny on day one of what was a not-so-straightforward opening skirmish to the domestic yearling sale season at Doncaster. “Happy Romance was the first filly we had in training and the first filly we actually bought,” McMurry recalled shortly after the celebrations ensued. “She did so well that we thought we'd give breeding a crack. It was our first filly, she won £700,000 in prize-money, so we thought we'd have a punt on breeding. This is the first offspring and it's gone pretty well so far. We had a couple of offers for Happy Romance but, because we only paid £25,000 for her, we were still in the green and felt it was worth having a punt breeding from her. I was hoping for £100,000 to £150,000, so we're over the moon with that result.”He added, “I did the mating myself. I like my pedigrees and Blue Point had a cracking year with Rosallion winning the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère and he'd worked well with that Exceed And Excel and Danehill line mares before. I thought it might be a commercial mating and it worked out that way. We've put a fair amount into it, so I thought this one was about balancing the books. We'll probably sell the colts and keep the fillies in order to make it work. We've got a Camelot colt coming next year and then an Oasis Dream colt the year after.”The headline act from Tuesday provided a timely reminder that, in this business, you don't need to spend a lot in order to dream big. Likewise, you just never know where the next top owner or breeder will come from. McMurry might be handier with a hammer than he is a headcollar but, through indulging his passion for bloodstock, he has found himself sitting on a potential Blue Hen to get his breeding operation up and running. And the ambition is for the venture to grow organically. He explained, “I called the Chasemore team out of the blue because I think Lezoo won the Cheveley Park that year. We were looking for studs to put our filly in and they cropped up, so I gave them a ring and this is where we are now, so it's pretty good. We have another filly in training with Richard Hannon and we'd love to build up a small broodmare band.”Trainer Ismail Mohammed – who a little later went to £180,000 to secure a No Nay Never filly from Camas Park Stud – signed the docket on the Blue Point colt. He commented, “We need the quality for our stable, and when we saw this colt, by Blue Point from a black-type mare, we said, 'He's the type we need to buy.' He's a good-looking horse and when we inspected him everything looked positive. Being by that sire, with that quality, he could be a Royal Ascot type. We're looking to support the sport here in Britain as well as in Dubai.”Meanwhile, the opening-day sale-topper was the product of Goffs canvassing the support of new supporters of this sale in Chasemore Farm. While Chasemore Farm had consigned horses at the Premier Yearling Sale last year, it was done so under the banner of WH Bloodstock. Their first foray into the market in their own right couldn't have gone any better to the delight of Tim Kent, the managing director of the sales company. Kent said, “Like I said in the TDN today, it was really off the back of Roger O'Callaghan's quote about vendors needing to support this sale better that we got out and spoke to loyal supporters as well as potentially new clients.
