In a ruling released Tuesday, the Ohio Racing Commission has vacated the one-year suspension that was handed down to jockey Albin Jimenez last summer by the stewards at Belterra Park. The Commission made its unanimous ruling after receiving a report from a hearing officer and listening to the comments of Assistant Attorney General Todd DeBoe.Jimenez was suspended following the review of an Aug. 21, 2025 race at Belterra. The stewards ruled that Jimenez failed to put forth his best effort aboard 3-5 favorite Afleet Vintage (Afleet Alex) on his way to a second-place finish. The stewards looked at the race following a request from Afleet Vintage's trainer Tommy Drury, who was unhappy with Jimenez's ride.Jimenez was the leading rider at Belterra at the time and, despite the suspension, won the 2025 riding title at the Cincinnati track.The decision falls into the “better late than never” category as one year has already passed from the time that Jimenez's suspension started. His attorney, Riley Ward, who is the son of trainer Wesley Ward, explained that without the Commission's ruling Jimenez would likely have continued to remain on the sidelines because Belterra officials had informed him that Jimenez would not be welcomed back and he was also told that the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission was not going to license his client. Ward said that the Ohio ruling changed the equation and that Belterrra officials have told him that Jimenez will be allowed back in and he expects there will not be an issue regarding a Kentucky license.“Belterra was not going to let him ride, so he was not going to get licensed in Kentucky or anywhere else,” Ward said. “He wasn't going to be able to ride because the tracks were going to bar him.”Jimenez typically rides at Turfway Park after the Belterra meet ends. He scored the biggest win of his career when guiding Knicks Go (Paynter) to victory in the 2018 GI Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.“We are pleased that the Ohio State Racing Commission unanimously adopted the Hearing Officer's recommendation and vacated the one-year suspension previously imposed against Mr. Albin Jimenez,” Ward said in a statement. “The Commission's decision confirms that the evidence did not support a violation of the Ohio racing rules and fully clears Mr. Jimenez in this matter. Mr. Jimenez has maintained his position throughout this process that he rode to his best ability, and we appreciate the careful consideration given by the Hearing Officer and the Commission. Albin looks forward to continuing his professional career and moving forward from these allegations.”Jimenez said he is looking forward to returning to riding.“I am really excited to be able to come back,” he said. “It's been a long year. The stewards made a really bad decision. They should have called me. If they thought I did something wrong, they should have come to me and talked to me first.
