While Lithgow has insisted that the author of the original books has little day-to-day input in the show’s production, she officially retains the title of executive producer.Two ‘Harry Potter’ Stars Exit ShowGracie Cochrane, who plays Ginny Weasley in Season 1, was the first cast member confirmed to be leaving HBO’s Harry Potter reboot. Her family announced that “due to unforeseen circumstances,” Cochrane had made the “challenging decision” to step away from the series after completing its first season.Her family added that Cochrane’s time in the Harry Potter world had been “truly wonderful,” while HBO said it supported the decision and thanked her for her work on the show. Ginny will now be recast for Season 2, when the character becomes far more central to the story in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Meanwhile, Hoult’s exit was announced earlier this week – but the actor has already been replaced.The Superman (2025) star was confirmed to appear as Gilderoy Lockhart – Harry’s vain (and talentless) celebrity Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in his second year at Hogwarts – for Season 2 on August 11. According to Deadline, it came down to a scheduling clash. HBO had already worked around two existing Hoult projects, but when his Gilderoy Lockhart scenes shifted within the Season 2 schedule, it was no longer workable, and the actor was released from his deal.HBO has since cast Game of Thrones star Kit Harington in the role. Harington previously voiced the character for Audible’s audiobook adaptation.Additional Exits Feel InevitableEven without controversy, keeping this cast intact for the long haul will be difficult. HBO plans to adapt all seven books across roughly a decade, with Seasons 1 and 2 stacking production back-to-back. Cinematographer Adriano Goldman has called filming around the young actors’ limited working hours “brutal,” with the leading trio – Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger), and Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley) – often only allowed on set for about 90 minutes at a time.Then there is the uneven nature of the story itself. Ginny, for example, moves from a small role in the first book to the center of the second before again playing a minor role in the third and fourth, while other characters disappear for long stretches. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson made it through all eight, while Dumbledore was recast after Richard Harris died. Griphook later changed actors, while Lavender Brown was recast as her role expanded.The commitment is particularly stark for Lithgow, who joked that his contract has him playing Dumbledore for a good part of a decade, through at least his late 80s. He has also called accepting the role a “hard decision” amid Rowling backlash, describing her views as “ironic and inexplicable” and admitting people had “insisted” he walk away.That scrutiny is unlikely to disappear, and the younger cast will eventually have their own decisions to make as they age. HBO has already acknowledged that its schedule must account for the children growing up. As their profiles, careers, and roles expand over the next decade, keeping every Hogwarts face in place may prove increasingly difficult.The first season of Harry Potter – technically titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – is set to premiere in December.
