A total of 57 people have been arrested following an operation targeting irregular immigration and human trafficking across Marsa, Ħamrun and Paola.Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield announced the arrests, saying they came following coordinated investigations by the Malta Police Force’s Immigration Police and the Detention Services Department.The largest number of arrests took place in Marsa, where 35 people were detained.Another 17 people were arrested in Ħamrun, while five were arrested in Paola.According to Bedingfield, those arrested originate from a number of countries across South America, Africa and Asia.The operation forms part of ongoing enforcement efforts by Maltese authorities targeting irregular immigration while also investigating potential cases of human trafficking.Bedingfield said the coordinated work between the Immigration Police and Detention Services is part of a continuous effort to combat both issues.Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the individual circumstances of those arrested or whether any charges will be filed.The operation comes as enforcement efforts continue to identify cases of irregular immigration as well as people potentially involved in human trafficking networks across Malta.•
