I am look at a "free" dog that costs us thousands of dollars a year in preventative vet care, food and toys. Just the basics not counting the costs if he gets sick or injured. One of our "free" cats got sick over Christmas a couple years ago and cost us over 4k for a couple days of emergency vet care. And that is on top of the thousands we pay for food, preventative vet care and toys. My fur monsters are 100% worth it. And would not hesitate to make sure they get what they need. But the cost of care is why we don't have more pets then we do. I would love to have a houseful but we aren't wealthy. I really hate people who ask for a free puppy or kitten but have no money to take care of them. They are just as bad as the people who breed their dog trying to make a quick buck. I hate them too. Like this woman on Nextdoor is selling pit bull mix pups. Shelters are full of pit bulls and pit bull mixes in our area because of people like her. People piss me off.
