Godwin Cini returns to Fenech’s claim that he gave Melvin Theuma €50,000 after Theuma told him he had already paid a €30,000 deposit linked to the murder.Fenech has previously said he paid the money because he panicked and wanted to stop everything, while ensuring Theuma did not end up out of pocket.Cini pressed him on that explanation, asking whether the payment effectively meant Theuma received an extra €20,000.Fenech insisted he was trying to stop Theuma, saying Theuma “won’t even cross the road unless you pay him”.The prosecutor suggested Fenech had “a hundred options” after being told about the €30,000 payment, but chose the worst one.Fenech disagreed, saying it was not the worst option because he had managed to stop Theuma “for a while”.Cini also challenged him on why the €50,000 payment did not feature in the recordings Theuma made of him.Fenech suggested it may have been mentioned in recordings that were not played, saying Theuma had only shown seven recordings.When asked whether he had studied the recordings before addressing the jury, Fenech said he did not need to, because he had lived through the events.“You don’t need to study what you experience,” he said.Cini replied that what someone experiences does not usually come in “10 different versions”.9:18am — Good morning and welcome back to court as the trial of Yorgen Fenech continues before Madam Justice Edwina Grima.•
