What had been hinted at for quite some time became official on Tuesday. An investment group consisting of Thomas Müller, Mats Hummels, Yann Sommer and Lucas Hernandez has acquired the Portuguese top-flight club Estrela Amadora. Estrela Amadora recently gained attention in Germany, particularly among fans of third-tier football, because of its transfer activity. Last winter alone, the club signed Tom Moustier from Rot-Weiss Essen, Max Scholze from Ulm, Chilohem Onuoha, who had been loaned from 1. FC Köln to SC Verl, and Dudu from Viktoria Köln. Now, even bigger names than that quartet have been linked with the club from the Lisbon suburb: an investment group involving former Bayern players Mats Hummels (retired), Yann Sommer (Club Brugge), Thomas Müller (Vancouver Whitecaps) and Lucas Hernandez (Paris Saint-Germain) has acquired a stake in Amadora. The club officially announced the deal on Tuesday. According to the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, the group purchased 90% of the share capital of the club's SAD (sports limited company) for €40 million. The four are not expected to provide significant financial backing themselves, but rather to play a primarily strategic role. The investment was spearheaded by Johannes Mösmang, who knew the quartet from his time as a player manager at Bayern Munich. As part of the deal, the 35-year-old is leaving the German record champions after around ten years and will instead become chairman of the company, making him president of the club. He succeeds Paulo Lopo. “Estrela Amadora is a traditional Portuguese football club with deep roots in Amadora, a unique identity and a passionate community,” Mösmang said in the club's statement. “The club also has one special feature: its own stadium. We are highly motivated to open this new chapter and to build a disciplined and sustainable project that the fans, the local community and everyone associated with Estrela can be proud of.” In recent years, Estrela have undergone rapid development. Following bankruptcy in 2011, only the youth academy existed for a long period before a senior team returned to competition in the lowest division in 2018. After merging with then-third-tier club Sintra, Amadora were back in the third division just two years later. It did not take the club long to return to the top flight.
