Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has served a legal notice for defamation to retired IPS officer Mohammad Mustafa, who is the husband of former Congress MLA Razia Sultana. The three-page notice, dated August 21, was issued through Chandigarh-based advocate Nikhil Ghai of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.According to the notice, Mustafa allegedly made highly personal attacks on Warring’s intelligence, competence, judgment, and ability to discharge leadership responsibilities during an interview with the platform ‘Waqt De Bol’. The program was broadcast and widely circulated on television and digital/social media platforms.Warring, who is the Member of Parliament from Ludhiana, claims the remarks were not objective criticism of any policy or decision but a deliberate attempt to portray him as incapable of the judgment expected of a political leader. The notice states that Warring, as a long-serving public figure and political leader in Punjab, has built a reputation through years of public service. It argues that the statements, coming from a former senior police officer of high rank, carried added weight and credibility in the eyes of the public, making them more damaging. It distinguishes legitimate political disagreement from personal attacks calculated to ridicule and harm reputation. Also Read | Wrong location, old footage: After Bhajji’s ‘doosra’ video fact-checked, he says ‘Punjab’s issues are real’Warring’s counsel has demanded that Mustafa immediately desist from repeating, publishing, or circulating the alleged defamatory statements or any similar ones.Warring has also asked Mustafa to issue an unconditional written and public apology.Story continues below this adThe notice adds that Warring has called on the news channel and media entities concerned to remove the interview content, while emphasising that such removal does not absolve Mustafa of responsibility for the original statements.Mustafa, a 1985-batch IPS officer who retired as Punjab DGP (Human Rights) in 2021, has been associated with Punjab Congress politics in recent years.
