The Malta Ranger Unit says it has documented suspected illegal fishing inside the Ċirkewwa Marine Conservation Area after spotting a vessel it had reportedly encountered in the protected area before.According to the unit, rangers were dealing with a separate report near Għajn Tuta when they noticed the vessel and kept an eye on it as it headed towards the conservation area.The rangers said they then made their way to the site after realising the vessel appeared to be heading there to fish.The unit contacted Transport Malta but claimed the authority could not access CCTV cameras at the site due to “ongoing maintenance”.Despite this, the rangers said they managed to gather enough evidence using their own equipment for the authorities to act on the matter. A report has since been filed.The Malta Ranger Unit said it intends to follow up on the case to confirm that it has been handled.Fishing methods including spearfishing, trolling lines, bottom lines, various nets, pots and traps are prohibited within designated conservation areas including off Ċirkewwa.The unit said it will also be highlighting the difficulties involved in monitoring environmental illegalities over the coming days, including why CCTV alone may not provide a complete solution.•
