A 17-year-old Arizona student has developed KáktosPatch, a biodegradable smart bandage designed to detect bacterial necrosis in saguaro cacti through colour changes interpreted by a smartphone app. Jorge Covarrubias’ project has won major science fair awards and earned him a place at the 2026 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.
