John Cassar had been ordered to report to police over a domestic violence complaint filed by his estranged wife just hours before he allegedly murdered his mother and attempted to kill his father in Mqabba, as reported by Times of Malta.Cassar, who was charged with murder and attempted murder on Saturday, faced fresh charges on Tuesday over the alleged online harassment of his estranged wife and for allegedly breaching a protection order. The court heard that Cassar sent messages to his estranged wife and published Facebook posts about her on 13th and 14th October, in the days leading up to the Mqabba incident. His estranged wife subsequently filed a report at the Santa Luċija domestic violence hub on 14th October.A risk assessment found that she was not considered to be at immediate risk of death, with the case classified as an “increased risk”, which police described in court as a medium-risk category.Police reportedly contacted Cassar on Thursday morning after being unable to locate him and instructed him to report to police, where he would have been arrested. He did not turn up.Hours later, police were called to the Mqabba residence where Cassar’s 72-year-old mother was found dead and his 74-year-old father seriously injured.Cassar has pleaded not guilty to the murder and attempted murder charges, as well as to the latest harassment-related charges.During Saturday’s court sitting, it was also alleged that Cassar sent a voice message after the attack saying he had “killed them both”.Police later negotiated his surrender following a standoff outside his residence in Ħal Farruġ.Cassar is being represented by lawyer Matthew Xuereb.•
