Rheinmetall has opened a new weapons manufacturing facility in Telford, England, restoring Britain’s ability to produce large-caliber tank and artillery guns domestically. The factory can manufacture up to 245 barrels annually, marking a major expansion of the country’s defense manufacturing capacity. The UK Gun Hall will produce 120mm and 155mm weapon systems, including guns for Britain’s Challenger 3 main battle tank program. Its opening also strengthens industrial cooperation between Britain and Germany under their Trinity House Agreement.Factory scales up gun productionRheinmetall equipped the 11,500-square-meter facility in just eight months, turning an empty building into an operational manufacturing site. Production began with breeches and breech blocks in May 2026. Barrel manufacturing followed in June. The facility can also produce more than 50 breeches annually at peak capacity. Its production lines will serve British military requirements alongside demand from NATO allies and international customers. The factory’s capabilities extend beyond finished gun barrels. Manufacturing breeches and breech blocks requires precision engineering and strict quality controls. Producing these components domestically gives Britain greater control over critical stages of weapons manufacturing.Rheinmetall also plans to source British steel from Sheffield Forgemasters. That step would bring another part of the manufacturing supply chain into the UK and support domestic steel production.Challenger 3 drives demandThe new facility will support Britain’s Challenger 3 tank program, which will use a 120mm smoothbore gun. It will also manufacture 155mm systems for future artillery platforms.Rheinmetall’s wider UK operations have received more than £200 million in investment over the past five years. Its work includes the Boxer mechanized infantry vehicle and the Challenger 3 program. The company employs around 685 people in Telford, including 35 at the new facility. Rheinmetall expects the Gun Hall to support more than 100 skilled jobs as production expands.Training has played a central role in establishing the factory. British employees traveled to Rheinmetall’s German production site in Unterlüß to learn specialist manufacturing techniques. They returned to Telford with expertise in precision production and quality assurance.Britain rebuilds defense industryBritish Defence Secretary Wes Streeting described the opening as a return to domestic weapons production after a 20-year gap. He also pointed to the project’s rapid delivery and employment potential. “From an empty site to full production in eight months, this is rapid reindustrialization in action,” Streeting said.Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said the facility would strengthen Britain’s industrial capabilities for decades. He also emphasized the company’s intention to expand its UK presence. The factory reflects a broader effort to secure military supply chains within allied countries. Domestic manufacturing can reduce reliance on overseas production when armed forces need replacement equipment or additional weapons.Rheinmetall will also work with British small and medium-sized businesses as output grows. The planned use of locally produced steel could further increase domestic participation. With production already underway, the Telford facility gives Britain a new source of critical gun components. Its eventual output will help determine how much of the country’s large-caliber weapons demand domestic industry can meet.
