A Minnesota man is being praised after he jumped onto a moving school bus and stopped it when the driver appeared to suffer a medical emergency. Ebro Ahmed, 27, helped protect nearly 20 children who were on board when he noticed something was wrong, according to ABC News. Ahmed said he was reportedly standing outside a convenience store when he saw a school bus passing with its door wide open. When he looked inside, he claimed that the driver appeared to be having a seizure, which made him run toward the vehicle and climb aboard. He told CBS News that he had never been behind the wheel of a bus before and was confused between the reverse and park gears for a brief moment. Following this, he mistakenly put the bus in reverse. “I started hearing beeps, and we were going backwards,” Ahmed explained. “And then I said, ‘That is not right,’ and I threw it into neutral and pulled the [parking] brake,” he added. Surveillance footage released by Ya Bricks Snacks and Tobacco captured the incident, showing how quickly he responded to the apparent emergency. “I really felt like it was my duty,” Ahmed told the outlet. “Also, too, it’s kids we’re talking about, you know. Even if I were to die, it would still be worth it,” he added. He recalled handing one of them his phone and glasses and allegedly asking her to hold them while he dealt with the situation. Ahmed also credited the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy with helping him remain composed. He said the show had taught him useful things about responding to situations he might never have expected to face in real life. “[The show teaches] you about what to do in situations that you never could see yourself in,” he explained. “So it’s just something like, you know, some tips and tricks that you could use for the rest of your life,” he added. His quick thinking and courage probably averted a major school bus accident. Saint Paul Public Schools confirmed that a medical emergency had occurred on the bus and that paramedics responded. No injuries were reported, and students were transferred to another bus to continue their journey home. The district also arranged for counselors to check in with the affected students following the incident. A school spokesperson later confirmed that the bus driver had been released from the hospital and was recovering at home.
