Point Of Law Leads Euro-Bred One-Two-Three In Geelong Cup

Wait 5 sec.

With his half-length victory in the G3 Geelong Cup over 2400 metres in Australia, Point Of Law (Frankel) has garnered favouritism–and a guaranteed berth–in the G1 Melbourne Cup on November 3. Joseph O'Brien's pair of Small Fry (Harzand) and Omni Man (Invincible Spirit) finished second and third in the race on Wednesday.Bred and formerly raced by King Charles III, the winner took out the G3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes at Newmarket in July carrying the royal colours. Sold privately and gelded, he now hails from the Ciaron Maher yard and races for an ownership group Down Under. The son of the Deep Impact mare Portfolio was making his first Australian start, as were the runner-up and third-place finisher.Favoured The Euphrates (Frankel) held the lead until fading around 300 metres from home as Point Of Law and Ethan Brown took over. He appeared a sitting duck for the rallying pair of Small Fry and Omni Man, but crossed the wire a half-length to the good of the former. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Omni Man.Maher was winning the race for the first time after several near misses. “It's great to win, but it's great to win it with such a progressive horse,” said Maher. “He's just a good horse. It was a beautiful ride by Brownie and hopefully he pulls up well, because he looks like he'll run two-miles.”“This is a good insight into how he was going to be,” Maher said. “With each passing day, he's relaxed a little bit more, he's got used to the routine. He paraded beautifully, so hopefully he pulls up well. He doesn't look like he's too stressed there and Brownie looks quite happy there as well. He'll have some decisions to make.”Added Brown, who was riding the winner for the first time, “From the gate, it couldn't have worked out any better. There was a bit of pressure early where I thought at one stage I was going to take it up, but I didn't want to wind him up too much knowing that he gets keen.“I had to be more of a horseman on him and work with him rather than worrying about trying to bang him into a spot and do something quickly.“I just allowed him to find his rhythm, bring him back outside the leader where he settled really well and although it was a strong gallop, I wasn't worried about it.“Ciaron told me the other day he galloped four laps when the rider couldn't pull him up at Werribee, so I knew he'd sustain a gallop. He's going to go to the Cup as a huge chance from what I felt today.”If either Small Fry or Omni Man deliver on the first Tuesday of November, it would be a third Melbourne Cup victory for O'Brien as a trainer. He saddled Rekindling (High Chaparral) to win in 2017 and Twilight Payment (Teofilo) in 2020. Both horses ran for ownership groups headed by Lloyd Williams. This year, Small Fry races in the silks of OTI Racing, and Omni Man carries the colours of Go Racing Esprit. Fantastic run in defeat by SMALL FRY (Harzand) to finish second, beaten just half a length, in the Geelong Cup Well done to @JosephOBrien2 @OTIRacing and breeder Turlough Boylan https://t.co/uyKpc5b2aR— Kilbarry Lodge Stud (@KilbarryLdgStud) October 21, 2026The post Point Of Law Leads Euro-Bred One-Two-Three In Geelong Cup appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
