I am still a new nurse, I have only been a nurse for almost 6 months. I am still processing this situation and looking for perspective from other nurses. I got a patient from the ICU today who was previously on a precedex drip a couple days ago and restrained up until 4 hours before I got him. ICU nurse said in report that the patient was completely oriented and calm. He was not completely oriented and calm when I got him. When I got him, he was slightly agitated but nothing too bad. As I was doing my assessment he progressively got more agitated and started refusing to answer my questions. I decided to step away for a moment to give him a break. I notified the provider of his orientation and agitation. When I came back in to complete my assessment, he was still pretty agitated but I decided to go ahead. I went to listen to him, and as I was listening he grabbed the bell of my stethoscope and closer up towards the ear pieces, pulled me towards him, and began to attempt to wrap it around my neck. Thankfully, I was able to react in enough time and got myself out of the situation. He of course ended up back in restraints. I don’t know what to think about the situation. In the moment, I was focused on what was happening and didn’t fully register what was happening until a nurse who witnessed it told me afterwards. Is there anything I could have done better? Does this happen to a lot of people? How do other people handle these situations? submitted by /u/SearchOk6518 [link] [comments]
