I spent months building an alternative to Letterboxd for cinephiles who care about technical specs, film movements, and awards archives (thekare.app)

Wait 5 sec.

Hey everyone, Like many of you, I spend an unhealthy amount of time logging films, tracking festival slates, and debating cinema. But using current film tracking platforms often left me frustrated by the same persistent limitations: Zero focus on technical craft: If you want to know whether a film was shot on 35mm spherical, its native aspect ratio, or its lens package, you have to dig through technical forums or obscure IMDb trivia tabs. Awards season is scattered: Tracking festival winners or predicting the Oscars usually means juggling clunky Google Sheets, Reddit threads, or messy group chats. No lists for people: Cinema is defined by directors, cinematographers, and actors—yet we still can’t build proper ranked lists or tier lists for filmmakers like Kubrick or Scorsese. Micro-genres over film history: Platforms love tags and nano-genres, but completely ignore actual cinematic movements (French New Wave, Italian Neorealism, Mumblecore, etc.). Zero power-user flexibility: You can’t customize your homepage layout or save complex search filters for later. Instead of just complaining about it, I decided to build kare from scratch. Here is what makes it different: 1. Technical Specs Front & Center Selected film pages features capture format (35mm, 70mm, digital), lens type, native aspect ratio, and technical specs right under the title. 2. Cinematic Movements (33 & Counting) Dedicated hub pages for historical and contemporary film movements—from the French New Wave to Mumblecore. Each movement page showcases its core philosophy, key figures, and seminal works. 3. kaREWARDS & Interactive Predictions An archive of 50+ academies, festivals, and guilds (Oscars, Cannes, Venice, BAFTAs, Emmys, and indie guilds) documented edition by edition. Right now, the 99th Academy Awards predictions are live: lock in your nominee picks (up to 10 for Best Picture, 5 for others), and once official nominations drop, switch to predicting the winners. 4. Ranked People Lists & Profile Spotlight Create ranked tier lists for directors, writers, and actors. You can also spotlight your personal pantheon of favorite filmmakers directly on your profile. 5. The TV & Anime Toggle (Purists vs. Casuals) You can log series and anime—but if you're a film purist, a single global toggle completely strips non-film media from your feed and interface. 100% cinema if you want it to be. 6. Power-User Customization Custom Homepage Layouts: Organize your dashboard based on what you actually care about. Saved Filters: Save complex search queries and custom filter stacks for repeated use. 7. Taste Twin Matching & Marathons Taste Twins: An algorithm that calculates your cinematic compatibility with other members and surfaces your shared niche favorites (like Spotify Blend for movies). List Marathons: Built-in challenge trackers that make working through large watchlists genuinely rewarding. The Indie Philosophy I’m building this independently without VC backing or corporate private equity pressure. The goal is to keep it fast, community-focused, and affordably priced without paywalling basic utility behind absurd subscription tiers. The web app is live right now: thekare.app (Quick heads-up: It’s best experienced on desktop right now! The mobile web view is still quite rough around the edges as all my mobile focus is going directly into the native iOS app). I’d love your brutally honest feedback: How does the navigation and overall UI aesthetic feel to you? Are there specific technical data points or festival archives you’d like to see added? Any UX friction or edge cases you bump into while browsing? P.S. As a thank you for your time, I’m giving away 10 free Auteur memberships (our top tier) to anyone who leaves detailed, actionable feedback or UX critiques in the comments. Just drop your thoughts below and I’ll DM you your access code! Thanks for taking a look! submitted by /u/asapawged [link] [comments]
