ShareReal Madrid host RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday as they look to secure their third win from three in the competition. By Matt SmithIt’s been a perfect start to the Champions League campaign for José Mourinho‘s side, and despite some hiccups in LaLiga, they’re starting to look back to their best. Madrid secured a phenomenal 4-1 victory against Sevilla last time out in the league, and they’ll be hoping to continue that fine form in the Champions League. Meanwhile, it’s been a mixed season for RB Leipzig so far. They suffered a 4-1 defeat against Como in their opening game of the Champions League, while they also lost 6-1 to Bayern Munich in their previous Bundesliga clash. The last time these two sides met was back in 2024, with a 1-1 draw being played out.Team newsReal Madrid will be without Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy, and Raúl Asencio once again, as the trio continue their recoveries from injury. Vinícius Júnior will be available once again after he missed the previous LaLiga match due to suspension, but he’s available for the Champions League – the only question is whether Mourinho will favour him over Yan Diomande, the man they they brought in from Leipzig over the summer?Christoph Baumgartner and Assan Ouedraogo should be the only Leipzig players who will miss this game due to injury.Mourinho’s old-school UCL styleIt’s only been a couple of games for Madrid in the Champions League so far, but we’ve certainly seen an interesting setup from Mourinho. The Spanish side are used to completely dominating games, even in the Champions League, but Mourinho has them sitting back and allowing the opposition to have the ball. Ball possession in the Champions LeagueOnly five sides in this season’s Champions League have had less of the ball than Madrid so far. Against Inter in their opening match, Madrid had just 36% possession but still managed to create 2.76 expected goals. Leipzig must tighten up defensivelyAs we saw last time out against Bayern Munich, Leipzig have struggled defensively so far this season. They’ve conceded 1.8 goals per game, but there’s no doubt it could have been more.Saves per match in the BundesligaNo side in the Bundesliga has had to make more saves than Leipzig so far this season. In the Champions League, it’s not been much better, considering they conceded four times against Como in their opening match.Arda Güler the wildcardOf course, the likes of Vinícius and Kylian Mbappé will be some of the players to watch against Leipzig, but Arda Güler could be the wildcard. Against Roma in their previous Champions League match, the Turkish international came off the bench to set up two goals, earning himself a start against Sevilla. Playing in a deep role, Güler hit a phenomenal strike to give Madrid the lead against Sevilla, while he also created the joint most chances in the game. That could have earned him another start against Leipzig, as he’s arguably been one of Madrid’s best players this season. PredictionWith Madrid being at home, we’re going for a 3-1 victory for Mourinho’s side(Cover image from IMAGO)You can follow every game from LaLiga with FotMob — featuring deep stats coverage, xG, physical metrics, and player ratings.
