I design parts in Onshape and love how it works, but it's cloud-only, needs an account, and the free plan makes your designs public. FreeCAD is the free offline option, but I've always found it painful to use. So I made FreeShape: a parametric CAD program that works like Onshape but runs entirely on your own PC. What it does: - Sketch, extrude, revolve, holes, fillets: change a number and the part rebuilds - Assemblies with mates (hinges, sliders and so on) - 2D engineering drawings with dimensions, exported to PDF or AutoCAD DXF - Sheet metal with flanges and flat patterns, ready for laser cutting - STEP and STL export for 3D printing I built it with a lot of help from Claude (AI), which is how one person got this far in 3 days. It's built on OpenCascade, the same geometry kernel FreeCAD uses, it's open source (GPL), and there's a Windows installer. It's early and there will be bugs, but I'm planning to keep improving it. I'd love feedback, especially on what would stop you using it. GitHub: https://github.com/richiewillmott/FreeShape submitted by /u/EnoughImagination702 [link] [comments]
