Trading Craft 101 路 Lesson 08 - The Breakeven Stop MythE-mini S&P 500 FuturesCME_MINI_DL:ES1!ConfluenceEdge_馃數 THE HABIT The moment a trade is a little in profit, the stop goes to breakeven. It feels like discipline - no loss can happen anymore. What actually happens is that you change the strategy in the middle of the trade, and you never measure the change. 馃數 THE TEST One mechanical setup, Nasdaq 100, daily, ten years: a close above the 20-day high, entry at the next open, stop 1.5 ATR below the entry, target at 1R. 334 trades. Variant one: the stop stays where the plan put it. Variant two: once the trade is 0.5R in profit, the stop moves to the entry. 馃數 THE RESULT Stop stays: +32.0R in total, +0.096R per trade, 54.8 percent winners. Stop to breakeven: -34.0R in total, -0.102R per trade, 18.9 percent winners. 174 trades closed at exactly zero. 165 of them would still have reached the target afterwards. 馃數 WHY Moving to breakeven does not reduce risk - the stop already capped it. It only decides how often you are still on board when the move comes. Every scratch is a trade removed from the winners column and booked at zero, which looks harmless per trade and is expensive in the sum. 馃數 WHAT THIS DOES NOT SAY One setup, one instrument, no commissions, no slippage, and the original edge is thin at +0.096R per trade. That is exactly the point: a thin edge does not survive an unmeasured rule change. A fat edge may absorb it. Test yours instead of assuming. 馃數 THE RULE If you change an exit, test it like a new strategy: same entries, same data, only the exit different. Otherwise you are running one system and grading another. Educational content only. Not investment advice.
