This is a really fair way to state your question and, more often than not, you'll find a receptive audience willing to help. I've used this when managers give feedback that I genuinely don't understand, and I can't think of a time where they've gotten visibly angry/frustrated or did not give a explanation that gave me a picture of what they wanted.
