Arsenal Fight Back Against Bayern as Rice Secures Dramatic Draw

Wait 5 sec.

Arsenal came away from the Allianz Arena with a valuable Champions League point on Wednesday evening after Declan Rice’s late equaliser secured a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich. It was an entertaining European encounter, with Eberechi Eze and Rice scoring for the Gunners, while former Tottenham striker Harry Kane was inevitably involved in both Bayern goals.Mikel Arteta’s side arrived in Munich having won their opening two Champions League fixtures, but maintaining that perfect record against the German champions was always going to be a difficult task.Eze strikes after early Saka injuryArsenal suffered an early setback when Bukayo Saka was forced off with an apparent thigh injury after just ten minutes. Eberechi Eze replaced him, and the substitute wasted little time making his presence felt.In the 25th minute, Martin Odegaard picked out Eze with a wonderful pass, and the England international finished confidently past Manuel Neuer. The goal survived a VAR offside check, giving Arsenal a deserved advantage.Unfortunately, the lead lasted just ten minutes.Harry Kane produced an excellent through ball to release Alphonso Davies, who beat David Raya to bring Bayern level in the 35th minute. The home side grew in confidence after equalising, leaving Arsenal with plenty to think about at half-time.(Photo by Leonhard Simon/Getty Images)Rice delivers when Arsenal need him mostBayern continued to threaten after the restart, and their pressure eventually paid off when Jurrien Timber was penalised for handball following a Kane effort. The former Tottenham striker stepped up and converted the resulting penalty in the 61st minute, putting Bayern 2-1 ahead.Arsenal needed a response, and with eight minutes remaining, Declan Rice provided it.A lovely passing move involving Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres released Rice into the penalty area, where the midfielder produced a superb finish from a tight angle to beat Neuer. As Sky Sports highlighted, Rice’s equaliser rescued Arsenal from what would have been their first defeat in 14 Champions League group or league-phase matches.Seven points from three European fixtures represents a strong start for Arteta’s side, particularly after such a demanding away encounter. The biggest concern, however, will undoubtedly be Saka’s injury, with Arsenal hoping their influential winger has avoided another significant spell on the sidelines.Did Arsenal show the character of genuine Champions League contenders tonight, or should we be concerned about how easily Bayern exposed our defence?
