Your daily loss limit, gone in 15 minutes (MNQ open, Oct 20)Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 Index FuturesCME_MINI:MNQ1!ClockworkFuturesOct 20, 9:30 AM ET. MNQ opened at 29,594. By 9:44 it traded 29,403.5. That is 190.5 points in 15 minutes. One micro bought at the open lost $381. Five micros, a common size on a 50K evaluation, lost $1,905. That is 95% of a $2,000 max drawdown before most people finished their first coffee. Then it reversed: 29,903 by 10:30, more than 500 points off the low. Anyone stopped out at the bottom watched the move they wanted happen without them. It was not a one-off. Over the last 38 sessions (Aug 28 to Oct 20), measured on the first 15-minute bar after the 9:30 open: The average range was 125 points ($249 per micro). The average move against an entry taken at the open was 95 points ($191 per micro, $954 on 5 micros). 17 of 38 sessions moved 100+ points against one side. 11 of 38 ranged 150+ points. What this means on a prop account: Size from your stop, not from your account. A 95-point average adverse move means a stop inside the first 15 minutes needs to be wide, or your size needs to be small. The open is where daily loss limits die. Five micros at the open puts about half a typical daily limit at risk on an average day, and all of it on a day like today. Waiting is a position. Letting the first 15 minutes print gives you a range to trade against instead of a coin flip inside it. The Prop Guard panel on the chart is free on my profile. It takes your risk budget and stop, tells you how many contracts fit, and counts down to your firm's flatten time. What size do you trade the open with, and do you wait for the first 15 minutes?
