Not every side project needs to become a startup to be worth building

Wait 5 sec.

I think the best side projects start with solving your own problems. For the past six months, I've been keeping a continuous time log of my life, inspired by Russian scientist Alexander Lyubishchev, who tracked how he spent his time for over 50 years. One thing I've learned is that time is one of the most honest ledgers of attention. I wanted a simple way to do this without constantly starting and stopping timers, so I built JustNow, an iPhone app that lets me log what I've just finished doing and automatically records the elapsed time. I've used it myself for six months before deciding to release it publicly. I don't know if it'll ever grow into a real business. But it has already solved a problem for me, and sharing it has helped me connect with people who struggled with the same thing. To me, that alone makes a side project worth building. If you'd like to try it, the free version covers many of the essentials. I'm still actively improving it based on user feedback.
