EPCOT Entrance Closed Due To Hazardous Conditions, Disney World Guests Redirected

Wait 5 sec.

Earlier today, we reported that the main entrance to Spaceship Earth at EPCOT had been closed, with guests directed to an alternate entrance on the side of the attraction. At the time, Walt Disney World had not shared any reason for the change, and there was no prior announcement letting guests know it was coming. Hours later, we now have a clearer picture of what’s going on. According to cast members at the attraction, this temporary change is due to safety concerns at the walkway beneath the iconic geodesic sphere.Spaceship Earth is one of the most recognizable attractions in all of Walt Disney World. For many guests, it’s the first ride of the day at EPCOT and the backdrop for countless family photos. So when guests arrived in the World Celebration neighborhood to find both the standby and Lightning Lane entrances blocked with stanchions, it naturally raised questions. Was the ride closing? Was this connected to the attraction’s upcoming reimagining? The good news is that Spaceship Earth remains open. Guests just have to take a different route to get in. Here’s everything we know about why the main entrance is closed, where to enter the attraction for now, and how this fits into the bigger changes planned for Spaceship Earth.Credit: Erica Lauren, Inside the MagicWhat Guests Saw Earlier TodayOn Thursday, guests found the main entrance to Spaceship Earth closed. Signs and Cast Members directed riders to a temporary entrance along the side of the building, closer to Project Tomorrow, the interactive area at the ride’s exit. LaughingPlace.com shared on X that the attraction was using a temporary entry point on the side of the queue, with a cast member scanning Lightning Lanes. At that temporary entrance, a cast member used a portable device to scan guests’ Lightning Lane selections before letting them into the queue. While our earlier coverage focused on the change happening Thursday, other reports indicate the main entrance may have been closed for several days.A Closer Look at the Main EntranceAt the main entrance, a black strap stretched between stanchions now blocks the walkway beneath the Lightning Lane and Standby Entrance signs. A small sign on the barrier reads “Exit Please Do Not Enter,” and the posts nearby are wrapped in blue padded covers.Black mats are still on the ground, and a purple Entrance flag continues to hang from the strap. Looking up at the underside of the sphere, one sees water streaks that turn out to be an important clue. Why the Main Entrance Is ClosedCast members explained that water dripping from Spaceship Earth, mostly during rain, is creating an unsafe condition at the main entrance. When the belly of the geodesic sphere drips, the walkway underneath becomes very slippery. That walkway happens to be the same one guests normally use to enter the attraction. With crowds passing through all day long, including families with small children, a slick path right at the entrance is a real safety concern. Moving guests to a different entrance avoids the problem area entirely. There’s no timeline yet for when the main entrance will reopen, but it’s likely a solution is being worked on.Credit: Scott Smith, FlickrWhere to Enter Spaceship Earth Right NowThe makeshift entrance is set well back from the sphere, at the beginning of a path along the side of the attraction. An A-frame sign near the front points Standby and Lightning Lane guests in different directions, and cast members are stationed nearby to help. The entrance is placed this far back so guests pass a warning sign before entering. The sign cautions that “Those who are made uncomfortable by enclosed, dark spaces should not ride.” It also reminds guests to supervise children at all times and includes a Must Transfer icon.Because of the new route, expect a longer walk to reach the queue. If you’re visiting with young kids or anyone who has trouble walking long distances, it’s worth building in a little extra time.Other Work Happening at Spaceship EarthThe entrance closure isn’t the only change around Spaceship Earth this year. An exterior panel refresh that began in August 2025 has focused on the flat panels along the Project Tomorrow building. There’s also a much bigger project ahead. At D23 in August, Disney announced plans to reimagine Spaceship Earth with a focus on human connection. The attraction was originally scheduled for an overhaul in 2019, but the project was shelved indefinitely due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.Walt Disney World has not said when Spaceship Earth will close for its reimagining or shared many details about the new storyline. It’s also unclear whether Dame Judi Dench, who currently narrates the attraction, will return for the new version. As for the dripping issue, there’s no word yet on whether the upcoming reimagining will address it. For now, the entrance change appears to be a separate, temporary fix aimed at keeping guests safe.Credit: Jeremy Thompson, FlickrWhat This Means for Your EPCOT VisitIf Spaceship Earth is on your EPCOT plans, here’s what to keep in mind:The ride is still open and operatingThe main entrance below the sphere is closedUse the temporary entrance along the side of the attraction near Project TomorrowLightning Lane guests will be scanned by a cast member at the side entranceExpect a longer walk to reach the queueFollow signs and cast member directionsWhat started as a mysterious closure of the entrance earlier today turns out to be a simple safety measure. While the detour adds a few extra steps, it keeps guests off a slippery walkway and keeps Spaceship Earth running. We’ll keep an eye on the attraction and share an update once the main entrance reopens. The post EPCOT Entrance Closed Due To Hazardous Conditions, Disney World Guests Redirected appeared first on Inside the Magic.
