The phrase "riding shotgun" comes from stagecoach messengers who sat beside the driver with a short double-barreled gun, and Derya Arms has built a new shotgun for the same job. The EX1400 Coach is a 12-gauge side-by-side with 18-inch barrels, a compact break-action gun made for fast pointing in tight quarters. It joins the 24-inch EX1400 Field in Derya's EX line of imported shotguns, which are built in Türkiye and exported to the U.S. A coach gun is not just a shortened field gun. It is a side-by-side cut to work from a cramped space, and the same shape still has plenty of uses: Cowboy Action stages, truck or boat carry where a longer barrel hangs up, brush hunting, and home defense, where two fast barrels and a break-open action make the whole operating manual. As Derya Arms Vice President Dustin Jones puts it: "That is what a coach gun is for." The Coach keeps the architecture of the EX1400 Field. The mono-block steel receiver is lighter without giving up strength, and it is finished in black chrome. The barrels share that finish. The stock is hand-selected Turkish walnut, and the grip is checkered and balanced for secure handling. A tang safety and a fixed bead front sight complete the controls, and the choke-threaded barrels take Full, Modified and Improved Cylinder chokes, which come in the box. The Coach holds two rounds and is 35 inches long overall, and it weighs 6.61 pounds unloaded. Length of pull is 14.3 inches, and the trigger pull is 4.4 pounds. Every Coach comes with an extra grip. The owner can leave it as a traditional coach gun or swap to the extra grip for a shorter, more compact hold, so the same shotgun can be run two ways. The box also holds a Derya bag, a user manual, a WTTA flyer, a cleaning cloth, a tool and the choke set. Both EX1400 models are backed by Derya's limited lifetime warranty to the original owner, and the Coach is compliant in California, Maryland and Massachusetts. The EX1400 Coach is SKU EX1400.12.18, UPC 810216300609, with an MSRP of $699. The 24-inch EX1400 Field (SKU EX1400.12.24, UPC 810216300036) has a 41-inch overall length and is the same price.
