Some members and sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kwabre East Constituency have raised concerns over alleged security threats ahead of the constituency executive elections scheduled for Saturday, October 25.The members say the prevailing atmosphere raises concerns about whether the polls can be conducted peacefully and credibly. They have questioned the decision by the Constituency Election Committee to hold the election at the Islamic Hall at Aboaso-Zongo, citing what they describe as security risks based on information gathered locally.Addressing a press conference at Mamponteng on Thursday, NDC Ward Secretary for Fawoade-Bampenase, Saeed Abdul Mumin, alleged that intimidation and threats were creating fear among party members ahead of the internal contest. He claimed some supporters of aspirants had received threatening messages and verbal warnings from opponents.“This election is filled with fear and panic because some of us have been receiving threats on our various platforms from the opponent’s camp that they will bring pepper spray to the venue,” he said.“We are worried about this move because this is an internal election, so what would make someone take such a decision?” he asked.Members question choice of venueMr Mumin also questioned the suitability of the Islamic Hall as the polling venue, arguing that its location near the residence of the incumbent constituency chairman, who is seeking re-election, could raise perceptions of bias.He said the facility was not an open and easily accessible public space and called for a venue that would inspire confidence among all contestants.Mr Mumin further accused the Kwabre East Municipal Chief Executive, Joseph Amankwah, of openly campaigning for some candidates, alleging that his conduct undermined the neutrality expected of him.The allegations have not been independently verified.Petition sent to security authoritiesThe Branch Organiser for Achiase, Charles Owusu, said the concerned members had petitioned Mr Amankwah, who also chairs the Municipal Security Council, as well as the Ashanti Regional Minister and the Ashanti Regional Police Command.According to him, the petitions were intended to alert the authorities to potential security risks ahead of the polls. He said the Constituency Election Committee had nevertheless maintained its decision to use the Aboaso-Zongo venue.Mr Owusu warned that the relevant authorities could face criticism if violence occurred after concerns had been raised in advance.“All we want is a peaceful election. We count on the security agencies and party leadership to monitor the process and ensure that delegates and party members can safely go to the polling centre to cast their votes,” he said.NDC members appeal for interventionOther members who addressed the press conference called on the Ashanti Regional and national executives of the NDC to intervene to prevent possible disturbances. They said the election should be free, fair, transparent and peaceful to preserve unity within the constituency ahead of the 2028 general elections. One member warned that a process perceived as unfair or marred by violence could deepen divisions within the party. The NDC constituency executive elections are scheduled for Saturday, October 25. The concerned members say they want party leaders and security agencies to address their concerns before voting begins.
