Tiger Woods is one of the greatest golfers of all time, but struggled with one aspect according to his former swing coach. The 15-time major winner partnered with Hank Haney in 2004 and the duo enjoyed plenty of success in their six-years together.Haney and Woods spent six-years together and followed a strict routineGettyHaney led Tiger through one of the most dominant stretches in golf history, producing 31 PGA Tour wins and 6 majors under an extreme routine.Tiger’s days started at 5:30am, with cardio, weight training, hours of ball-striking, multiple nine-hole sessions, short-game work, putting blocks, and finished with another lift.Despite this unparalleled success, Haney feels like Woods is the worst player he has ever dealt with in one particular aspect of golf.“People speculate all the time about him, but they are guessing,” Haney said in 2022 on GOLF’s Subpar podcast. “I was there. I spent 150 days a year with him for six years. He was incredible, just unbelievable. “I would stand on the driving range and just think, there is no way these guys could beat him.“Honestly, he wasn’t nearly as good on the course. Nobody is.“I told this to a few people – I’ve taught over 200 touring pros, and the worst player at taking it from the driving range to the golf course that I ever coached was Tiger Woods.”“He won 45 per cent of the time he teed it up when I helped him, and on the driving range you’d think there’s no way this guy could ever lose.“But you are always going to have regression I’m just saying he hardly ever missed a shot.”Haney coached Woods through the most dominant stretch of his careerGettyHaney said Woods was the worst player at taking the opening shot of a tournamentGettyWhy did Haney and Woods part ways?In 2010, during the most dominant stretch of his career, Woods was also dealing with off-the-course drama.Woods crashed his SUV into a tree and a fire hydrant outside his Windermere, Florida, home. Over the next few weeks his personal life unravelled with reports of multiple extramarital affairs. He lost major sponsorship endorsements. However, Haney pointed out it wasn’t Woods personal crisis that ended their partnership – things had just run their course after a hugely successful time together.“That’s not the reason why I left, I feel very bad about that. But Tiger has taken responsibility for it,” Haney continued.“It was just time to move on. All coaching relationships have a lifespan.”Woods’ 2019 win at Augusta remains the only major he won following Haney’s departureGettyAfter Haney’s departure Woods did not win another major before the 2019 Masters, and he has not competed since the 2024 Open Championship.
