He was one of the least experienced runners in the field, but he battled on like a seasoned pro, and it bore sweet fruit for Just for Pipa. The son of Justify gamely collected the Bowman Mill Stakes and earned his first black type win in the process on closing day at Keeneland. The bay debuted Sept. 19 at Churchill Downs, and defeated that field of maidens by 1 1/4 lengths. By the time the gates broke here, the betting public had saddled him with 5-1 odds for the trip.Content to watch the race unfold from third while Conviction (Tiz the Law) set the tempo, Just for Pipa tracked the action from the three path and was rolling four off the rail into upper stretch as Booked (Yaupon) also ranged into contention for the homeward drive. Steadily reeling in the embattled duo ahead of him, the victor overhauled those two in the shadow of the wire to win by a neck. Conviction bravely held off Booked by the same margin.“It worked out great,” said winning rider Edgar Morales. “Cutting back half a furlong [having won at 6 1/2 furlongs in his first race] was the only question, but I think the pace set up for us and he does have a run, so we just turned for home and got them.”“[Winning his first Keeneland stakes] is great. My first career win ever was [at Keeneland], and my first stakes now–it's great to have it.”“It's very special–I'm going to cry now,” said Saints or Sinners's Ana Maron. Just for Pipa was named in honor of her late father. “It just means a lot. I wanted to do something special for my dad. He and I were always very close. No matter what I was doing, he was always very supportive. When we were into horse racing, he didn't know anything about it but he always asked, came to the races, mostly at Santa Anita and Del Mar. He spent time there, was amazed, giving carrots to the horses.”“So when he passed away two years ago, I wanted to find something to honor him and carry on, and we had this homebred at our farm. He was by Justify, and I played around with the name and I said to Hans, 'I've got the perfect horse for my dad, Just for Pipa,' honoring Justify, his sire, and then also my dad, Pipa. So happy.”“At the three-eighths pole, I thought we were probably going to be third,” said trainer Greg Foley. “He was a pretty good ways back. But at the eighth pole–I'm watching the race by myself on a TV–[I thought] 'He can (get) there from here.' He ran great, he's trained great. He's a nice colt.”Just for Pipa is the first to the races for his dam, herself out of a half-sister to MSW & GSP Magic Hour (Awesome Again). He has a yearling half-sister named Sundevali (Proxy) as well as a 2026 half-brother by Midshipman. Arya'slightnbolt was bred to Golden Pal for 2027. The third dam is MGISW Affluent, who also placed in several elite-level contests during her racing career.
