What Is the ‘Box Theory’? The Viral Dating Trend That Explains How Men View Women.

Have you heard the idea that men categorize women into one of three boxes immediately upon meeting them? This concept, also called the box theory, has taken the internet by storm in recent years. Let’s explore this idea. What Is the Box Theory of Dating?Coined by Tinx, a popular lifestyle influencer, box dating describes the following theory: “When men meet you in a romantic setting, they put you in a box. Either wanna date you, they wanna sleep with you, or they want nothing to do with you.”“It’s very difficult to shift from box to box, and your behavior doesn’t really affect what box you’re in,” Tinx states in her video. “So, if he meets you and he’s like, ‘I wanna date this girl,’ you could puke on his shoes and sleep with him on the first night, and it wouldn’t matter. Vice versa, if he meets you and he just wants to hook up, you could make him wait three months to sleep with you—it’s not gonna change that.”In her video on the topic, Tinx shares that she created this theory to push back on the “three date rule” or “five date rule,” where women wait to sleep with a man to ensure he’s in it for the right reasons. Unfortunately, Tinx notes, this won’t change how he views you.“The theory argues that once a woman is placed into a specific category in his mind, it is nearly impossible for her to move out of it, no matter how much effort, affection, or time she puts in down the line,” explains Gemma Nice, certified, multi-award-winning Somatic Sex & Relationship Coach, author, and intimacy specialist. “I have seen this firsthand with some couples I have worked with.”The Three ‘Boxes’ of Box DatingAccording to Tinx, men tend to categorize women into three boxes when dating: relationship material, casual sex, or nothing at all. While this might help men make sense of their feelings and intentions, women often falsely believe they can work their way up to the highest box.“The trap so many women fall into is believing that if they stay in the casual box long enough, perform enough wife duties, or show how easy-going they are, he will eventually move them into the relationship box,” says Nice. “In reality, when someone has already compartmentalised you, doing more only drains your energy while keeping you stuck. It will never go anywhere because he has made up his mind, and nothing will change that. Even if you think you are the woman to change him, he won’t.”Why Men Might Engage the Box DatingWhile I obviously can’t speak for every man—or really any of them, as a woman—many of my guy friends have confirmed the box dating theory is real. But why might this be?“If a man doesn’t feel that immediate long-term spark, or if he simply isn’t in a place where he can handle emotional commitment, filing someone into the casual box lets him enjoy companionship and intimacy without opening up his heart,” says Nice. “It keeps his emotional walls firmly in place while still getting connection on his own terms, keeping them at arm’s length.”Nice adds that this is often a result of an avoidant attachment style.“Closeness signals danger to their nervous system rather than comfort, so they use emotional compartmentalization as a shield to stay in control without having to risk real vulnerability,” she says.Of course, we all operate differently. What works for some men might not work for others, and women can also mimic this behavior. Whether you engage in the box theory or not, just make sure you’re open and transparent about your intentions. The post What Is the ‘Box Theory’?
