Unai Emery is capable of succeeding at Manchester United, but Aston Villa remains the perfect fit for him. That’s according to Guillem Balague who revealed to talkSPORT that, despite contemplating a summer exit, the Spaniard is excited for the future at Villa Park.Emery has been eyed by the United hierarchy as they make initial steps to possibly make a new appointment in the dugoutGettyUnited are seemingly preparing for life without head coach Michael Carrick after a dismal 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.Julian Nagelsmann has been sounded out as a possible replacement, whilst talkSPORT exclusively reported earlier on Thursday that Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler would not be interested in the job.Emery, who won the Europa League with Villa last season, was part of the recruitment process at United in the summer before they gave Carrick the permanent role. However, it’s understood he would need convincing to leave Villa, as Spanish journalist Balague detailed why the 54-year-old is more than happy to stay put.Emery set for Villa stay over United moveWhen asked on White and Jordan if United would be keen on Emery, he said: “You have to take this question from Unai Emery’s point of view. This is my opinion, but basically he is where he wants to be. “He is where he is appreciated, where he has been given everything that is required, including the co-ownership; the owners (V Sports) now co-own his own little club back in Spain (Real Union). “He has also been given a huge amount of responsibility to take the team as far as he wants to, and he wants to use that responsibility to take the team as far as he can.”Balague joined the show the day after Villa beat Viking FK 3-1 in the Champions League, which maintained their 100 per cent record. He took the opportunity to praise the impact of Emery’s coaching on his team in what is a stark comparison to the United squad of late.“They all know what they have to do when they go on the pitch. They had players missing but still, once they came on, even (Tyrone) Mings as a left-back, they knew what they had to do, they can play with their eyes closed.Carrick is under the cosh as United head coach having not won any of their last seven matches across all competitionsGettyBalague is confident that Emery would be a successful replacement for Carrick, but has stressed that he is enjoying life at VillataklSPORT“When you follow PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) closely, when you follow Hansi Flick’s Barcelona, when you follow Aston Villa“then you see a team that just look… the players are looking at each other. It’s like, ‘What are you doing in training, what are you doing with your time?’ Players are not listening, it’s really annoying.”“Can he do that job? 100 per cent he can,” Balague declared on Emery being a hit at United, months after he appeared to come close to ending his tenure at Villa.Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans, Emi Martinez and Ezri Konsa were all key to their 2025/26 Europa League triumph, but were then among numerous sales during the summer transfer window.Villa signed replacements including Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Zion Suzuki, all of whom have impressed, but at one point, Emery considered whether or not he had done all he could. Was Emery close to leaving Villa?“There might come a time that Unai Emery will think he’s taken Aston Villa as far as he can,” Jim White speculated, and Balague replied: “Oh yeah, it was in the summer.Emery is now in his fifth season at Villa and ended their 30-year trophy wait by winning the Europa LeagueGetty“He was like, ‘That’s it. Why does Tielemans go? I don’t want him to go. Watkins, does he have to go? Morgan Rogers? Yeah, okay, I get that one’.”However, he explained the U-turn in Emery’s thinking: “And then he went like, ‘Phew, okay, start over’. And now, he’s so excited about having these youngsters coming through. “They will go up and down, and of course they haven’t won in the league at home yet. A lot of other things will happen.“But the target is, ‘Can we go (for the) Champions League? Can we do well in Europe?’ At the moment, they’re second in the table in the Champions League, three wins in three games.”
