On Saturday evening, Tottenham Hotspur head to Stamford Bridge to face bitter rivals Chelsea, where they will look to build on their first Premier League win of the season over Coventry City. The win took Spurs out of the relegation zone and up to 16th, with the hope it will prove a springboard to start climbing the table. The season is, after all, only seven games old, with plenty of time to turn what was a difficult start into a very successful campaign for Roberto De Zerbi and his squad. They will look to follow in the footsteps of Spurs sides of old to get a positive result against Xabi Alonso’s side. So, let’s take a look back at some of the very best Tottenham versus Chelsea clashes of seasons gone by.Photo by Catherine Ivill – AMA/Getty ImagesThe Battle of the BridgeOne of the most pulsating encounters in recent times was late in the 2015/16 season as Tottenham looked to chase down Leicester City and deny them a fairytale Premier League triumph. Spurs knew a win would keep their title dreams alive and by half-time, it looked as if they were well on the way there. Goals from Harry Kane and Heung-min Son had them 2-0 up but, as many know, it is a dangerous scoreline.Chelsea pulled one back early in the second half through Gary Cahill, before Eden Hazard ended Tottenham’s title dreams late on. It was a fiery, bad-tempered game, with Tottenham racking up nine yellow cards, setting a Premier League record at the time.Harry Kane comes of ageChelsea arrived at White Hart Lane as Premier League leaders, but faced Harry Kane at his very best. Diego Costa gave the visitors the lead, before Tottenham came roaring back as Harry Kane struck twice, with Danny Rose, Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli also getting on the scoresheet. It was a New Year’s Day classic with Kane tormenting the Chelsea backline on his way to winning the PFA Young Player of the Year Award. Tottenham went on to finish 5th, while Chelsea did win the Premier League that season.Dele Alli lays a hoodoo to rest What Spurs wouldn’t give for a repeat of this one on Saturday night. It had been nearly 28 years since Tottenham last won a league game at Stamford Bridge, and when Alvaro Morata gave the hosts the lead, it looked as if that hoodoo was set to continue. But Christian Eriksen equalised with a terrific long-range strike, before Dele Alli scored twice in the second half as Mauricio Pochettino‘s men strengthened their grip on a top four spot on their way to Champions League qualification that season.Spurs seal first Chelsea league win for nearly 20 yearsAnother hoodoo breaker came in 2006 as Spurs finally managed to defeat Chelsea for the first time in 16 years in the league. Once again, Chelsea were the ones to take the lead – there’s something of a theme here, isn’t there? But Michael Dawson equalised before Aaron Lennon fired the hosts into the lead. A late red card for John Terry was the cherry on top as Spurs finally got one over their London neighbours.Jonathan Woodgate ends Tottenham’s trophy droughtWembley glory for Tottenham. Their first major trophy since 1999. A victory over regular tormentors, Chelsea.Again… Chelsea took the lead. Didier Drogba fired them in front with a free-kick, before Dimitar Berbatov equalised from the penalty spot. Neither side could find a winner, taking things to extra-time where Jonathan Woodgate forced the ball home to end Tottenham’s trophy drought in the process. There have been many other memorable encounters between the two sides. Who can forget Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte squaring off on the touchline after that bizarre handshake incident following Harry Kane’s last-gasp equaliser back in 2022?Back in the early 2000s, Tottenham hammered Chelsea 5-1 in the League Cup semi-final with goals from Steffen Iversen, Tim Sherwood, Teddy Sheringham, Simon Davies and Sergei Rebrov on what proved to be a very famous night. Spurs won 6-3 on aggregate, only to lose 2-1 to Blackburn in the final. Heung-min Son scored one of the best solo Tottenham goals of the modern era in a 3-1 triumph back in 2018, while Dele Alli’s brace in a 2-0 win in January 2017 ended Chelsea’s 13-match Premier League winning streak. Will there be another iconic clash between the two sides this weekend? One thing’s for sure, if Tottenham do go a goal down, there’s no need to panic…READ MORE: Tottenham’s five best-ever Stamford Bridge performances to inspire a Tuesday night win – Spurs WebThe post Tottenham vs Chelsea: Five most memorable meetings in London derby history appeared first on Spurs Web.
